A Friday Concert!

Concerts in the Courtyard

It's the final Concerts in the Courtyard at the Historic New Orleans Collection for the Spring Season so come out and experience a concert in the courtyard at the Historic New Orleans Collection in the heart of the French Quarter - 533 Royal Street. The show is from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with cellist and vocalist Helen Gillet. Sponsored by Associated Office Systems, the concert series features live music performed in a beautiful French Quarter courtyard. Admission includes three Praline Liqueur cocktails, provided by Sazerac! Admission is $10 at the door, free for THNOC members. Memberships begin at $35 per year. Guests must be 21 or older to enter.

Friday Vino Fun!

It's the weekly wine tasting over at Pearl Wine Company (Orleans at Moss St.) - from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Come out and sample some fantastic wines and take some home too!

And you can double your wine tasting fun! Check out Swirl located on Ponce de Leon right off Esplanade and enjoy a FREE wine tasting at 6:00 pm. Jared Breaux will be pouring 4 great wines from South America this week accompanied by some delicious tapas sent over by Chef Dan Esses. Come hungry for delicious empanades and ceviche too!

*And after Swirl...head right down the street for Lips and the Trips from 7:30 to 9:00 pm, at Fairgrinds Coffeehouse - Out in the Courtyard. Only cover charge are your inhibitions!

If you're Uptown head on over to Martin's Wine Cellar (3500 Magazine)....They'll be serving up some lovely wines from 4:30 to 6:30 pm!

Night at the Museum!

FRIDAY NIGHTS AT NOMA tonight from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tonight, NOMA presents a gallery talk with Rashaad Newsome and Miranda Lash in the Great Hall as well as screening two films in honor of Gay Pride Month. You can also check out Café NOMA for "Art You Can Eat," where Chef Haley Bittermann will lead a demonstration on culinary arts from the Caribbean islands. This event is included with museum admission. In honor of Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts from the World's Fairs, 1851-1939, all "Art You Can Eat" demonstrations in June will focus on cuisine from a different area of the globe.

Saturday Afternoon Music!

Head on down to the Old U.S. Mint (400 Esplanade) as Sasha Masakowski and Cindy Scott performers lead a free Jazz showcase from 2:00 to 3:30 p .m.  If you haven't checked out the beautiful and cool theater - you really need to get yourself down there!

While your in the Quarter check out a double header of music at the Louisiana Music Factory (210 Decatur) - It's a performance by Mia Borders at 2:00 pm and followed by Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes at 3:00 p.m.  Be sure to check out their amazing music collection and go home with a CD or classic album!

BEER!

Celebrate all things BEER at the WYES International Beer Tasting - Saturday night at Mardi Gras World (1380 Port of New Orleans) from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. - There will be over 275 beers to sample at the state's oldest beer tasting event. The music will take over the streets! If you are in town for Jazz Fest, you must come by Tchoupitoulas and Napoleon Avenue! Movies in the Garden: The Princess Bride - at the New Orleans Museum of Art's (NOMA) Sculpture Garden - NOMA and the New Orleans Film Society are bringing more of your favorite films to the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. This Friday, catch the 1987 comedy The Princess Bride.
**Admission: $6 for adults, $3 for NOMA/NOFS Members & children, 7 to 17. Guests who purchase admission to the museum will also have access to the Sculpture Garden and activities. Children 6 and under are free.

Starlight Racing at the New Orleans Fairgrounds (1751 Gentilly Blvd.) - Groove on down to the sounds of the Bucktown All-Stars and DJ Live! Gates open at 4:00 pm and the first post is at 5 p.m. The live bands take to the Clubhouse stage at 7 p.m., while the DJs in the Miller Lite Beer Garden spin nonstop until after the last race, about 9 p.m.

*General Admission to Fair Grounds for Starlight Racing is $5.

Saturday Fun!

History!

The Friends of St. Alphonsus (FOSA) is holding its 20th Roots Program at St. Alphonsus Church, 2025 Constance Street on Saturday, from 10 am until 1:30 pm. It will feature three presentations highlighting the people whose stories made history in the Irish Channel.

The first presentation will feature research on the Irish population during the latter part of the 19th century by Perry Faulkner, a Tulane intern workinig with FOSA. Another one will feature a preview of the upcoming exhibit at St. Alphonsus on the religious of the Irish Channel which will open in April. The feature presentation will focus on Father James Sheeran, CSSR, a widower, father, Redemptorist priest and chaplain to the 14th Louisiana Regiment during the Civil War. Dr. Patrick Hayes, Ph.D, archivist for the Redemptorist Baltimore Province, will present highlights from a 2 volume diary kept by Father Sheeran during his service as Chaplain in the Confederate Army.

Registration is $15 for FOSA members and $20 for all others. It will also include a lunch of corned beef and cabbage with Irish coffee and desserts at the conclusion of the program. A Market!

Head on out to the Piety Street Market (The Old Ironworks - 612 Piety St.) from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. There's gonna be live music by Rites of Swing!  And of course, 40+ vendors offering an eclectic assortment of art, handmade jewelry and crafts, homemade goodies, vintage collectibles and flea market finds at this bustling neighborhood market.

Oysters!

Head on down to the Quarter early for the Louisiana Oyster Jubilee at 9:30 am on the 300 block of Bourbon Street.  There's gonna be music, and food with the world's longest oyster po-boy!!  The "Best Oyster Po-Boy in New Orleans Competition" kicks off at 9:30 am with the construction of the humongous sandwich..cutting and distribution begins at Noon.  First come first served - so get there early - yum!!!

The Louisiana Music Factory (210 Decatur) has been renovated and is looking all pretty for the return of the In-Store Concerts.  Be sure to come on by Saturday for free performances by Micah McKee at 2:00 pm and Sweet Olive String Band at 3:00 pm.  While you're there be sure to peruse their amazing CD collection and bring home some Louisiana music to enjoy!

Parade!

Tonight is the annual Italian-American Marching Club's St. Joseph's Day Parade at 6:30 pm.  It kicks off on the corner of Canal and Chartres and marches through the Quarter.  Hundreds of tuxedo clad, flower carrying marchers will head through the streets handing out fava beans and paper flowers for a hug and a kiss!  Look out for grand marshalls Michael Badalucco, Vincent Pastore and Zach Strief!  Click the link for the parade route - http://www.iamcnola.org/

Fun on Frenchmen!

The Nickel-A-Dance concert series continues over at the Maison on (508) Frenchmen Street at 4:00 pm with Frank Oxley's Joint Chiefs of Jazz.  The free series runs the entire month of March and it's family friendly - so bring the gang!!

Garden Party!

On the second Sunday of March, April, May and June, at 4:00 pm the New Orleans Botanical Garden and The Backbeat Foundation will host GARDEN PARTY an outdoor concert series on the beautiful Robert B. Haspel Garden Stage. The stage is located in the New Orleans Botanical Garden on the east side of the Pavilion of the Two Sisters. Music lovers will enjoy great music while relaxing on the lawn and savoring the beautiful surroundings of the Botanical Garden. Befitting the setting, the series will focus on Louisiana Roots Music. This Sunday's performance includes the Honey Island Swamp Band plus Mia Borders!

1st Annual Prima Festival - Prima Fest will be the first major heritage festival to kick off the 2013 Spring Festival Season here in Louisiana. The festival dates are March 7th-10th and will be held at Mississippi River Heritage Park, 1101 Convention Center Blvd., New Orleans featuring restaurants and a four day talent line-up. *Louis Prima was born in New Orleans and remains one of the greatest in popular music and a powerful entertainment influence over the decades. The King of Swing, Louie Prima scored chart topping hits such as, Jump Jive and Wail, Just a Gigolo, Sing, Sing, Sing, Oh Marie, A Sunday Kind of Love and many more. In 1954 Louis downsized his band and created a small group named the Witnesses with his beat combined with New Orleans Jazz. He became the Father of Las Vegas entertainment. He was awarded the very first Grammy Award in the vocal group category for That Old Back Magic and his song, Sing, Sing, Sing was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1958. He also appeared in Disney's 1967 motion picture classic, The Jungle Book. Louis Prima passed away August 24, 1978, but his music lives on. Louis sings:
When the end comes I know they'll say just a gigolo. And life goes on without me...

Kick off Jazz Fest in style! Threadhead Records invites you to attend the 3rd Annual Threadhead Thursday at City Park tonight from 6 pm – 11 pm at the Robert B Haskel Outdoor Garden Stage in the New Orleans Botanical Garden at City Park. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and join us and some of our multi-talented THR artists for a magical night under the stars including Glen David Andrews, Paul Sanchez and the Rolling Road Show, The Honeypots, and The Creole String Beans!! Armstrong Park Thursdays continues tonight with David Batiste & Family plus Kermit Ruffins. The concerts will run from 5 to 7 p.m. and come hungry - there will be food from Café Treme, Wine and Bistro, Jacques-Imo's Café, and more...Fun!!

The Live at Lafreniere Park Concert Series continues tonight at the Park Pavilion with the Bucktown Allstars at 6:00 pm. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, etc. and enjoy an evening of live music in the Park and best of all it is FREE!!

Join the New Orleans Film Society to watch the Oscars® live on the BIG SCREEN at the Prytania Theatre for an unofficial screening of the 84th Annual Academy Awards®. Walk the red carpet in your finest glam garb—or come dressed as a character from your favorite nominated film (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo anyone? Or how about wearing a Bridesmaids dress? Or a Descendants Hawaiian shirt?). Also, be ready to flaunt your film knowledge for Oscar trivia! Prizes will be awarded to all trivia and costume winners. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., show starts at 7:00 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $20 for NOFS members and $25 for non-members. GratiNOLA Weekend w/Markets, Beer Crawlin', Peeradin' & Lots o' Music!

It's time to start you're Mardi Gras kick-off weekend - what's going on?!

Markets!

Head on down to the Freret Street Market (corner of Freret and Napoleon) for more than 90 vendors with loads of food, produce, art, collectibles, pet adoptions, music and appearances by the Big Easy Roller Girls.  The market runs from noon to 5:00 pm and musical performances include - The Blue Runners at Noon, Anais St. John at 1:45 pm and Debauche at 3:30 pm!  For more info visit www.freretmarket.org

And there's more markets with the Piety Street Market at the Old Ironworks (612 Piety) from Noon 'til 5:00  pm - The Market is delighted to welcome Helen Gillet and Wazozo as their musical guests where they'll usher in Carnival season and serve as the opening act for this year's Krewe de Vieux parade.... 40+ vendors offer a festive array of Mardi Gras costumes, accessories & masks, creative art, handmade jewelry and crafts, homemade goodies, vintage collectibles and flea market finds in a bustling neighborhood market. It's a Bar Crawl with NOLA Brewing Company!! This year for the Release of Flambeau Red Ale NOLA Brewing Company is having a Bar Crawl through the historic French Quarter before the Krewe du Vieux parade. The Krewe du Brew Bar Crawl theme will be "Mardi Gras on Fire" and costumes are encouraged.  
*The Bar Crawl begins at 1:00pm starting at the R-Bar (1431 Royal St). From R-Bar the Bar Crawl heads over to Balcony Music Club (1331 Decatur St) at 2:30. After Balcony Music Club the Bar Crawl will meet at Turtle Bay (1119 Decatur St) at 3:45. Then to end the Bar Crawl everyone will meet at Molly's at the Market (1107 Decatur St) at 5:00. Each bar will be serving the Flambeau Red for $3.00 a pint during our hour there. The Krewe du Vieux Parade starts at 6:30 so everyone will be in perfect position. Yea for beer!!

Music!

While in the Quarters make sure you stop by the Louisiana Music Factory (210 Decatur) for some great in-store concerts!!  It's Gina Forsyth at 2:00 pm and Jack Brass Band at 3:00 pm...Remember to get your drink ticket for cheap beer down the street, and make sure you pick up a CD or album while your there - they've got the best music selection in town!!

Parades!

After all the beer and music it's time for the pee-rades!!  Krewe du Vieux gets kickin' in the Marigny at 6:30 pm with the theme "Crimes Against Nature"...This satirical group has some of the best costumes, floats and kooky throws you'll ever see in all of Carnival!  There's a new route this year so click on the link so you don't miss out on the craziness!!  http://www.kreweduvieux.org/parade.html

A newer Krewe - Krewe DeLusion follows immediately after Krewe du Vieux, and joins in on the satirical fun.  This group also starts down Royal Street, but turns a block  earlier and in the opposite direction on St. Peter St., then two more  rights on Bourbon and St. Philip streets, then back towards the Marigny  on Decatur before ending just across Esplanade Avenue.

Frenchmen Street is kickin' with music after the big peerades!  d.b.a. (618 Frenchmen) has Little Freddie King at 7:00 pm and then come on back for the late show with The Tin Men at 11:00 pm - they're sure to please (there's a small cover for the Chief - but you don't want to miss the show

Grab some delicious brunch and some great music over on Esplanade Avenue at the Backroom at Buffa's (1001 Esplanade) with Some Like it Hot stirrin' up the pot at about 11:00 am...and if you're Uptown delight in the sounds of the Courtyard Kings starting up at 11:00 am over at Cafe' Rani (2917 Magazine)...And don't forget about The Columns Hotel (3811 St. Charles) on the other Avenue with some more yummy brunch and Chip Wilson!  Nothing like some Bloody Marys and some great music!

After brunch take a "free ride" over the might Mississippi to the Old Point Bar (545 Patterson) in Algiers...they've got the Craig Paddock at 3:30 pm!  Stay on for the big game too!

Sunday evening find your favorite spot to watch the game or the big Puppy Bowl (I heard there's gonna be a big kitty half-time show - probably much more entertaining then Madonna!!)  Have a good one and "Go Eli"!!
