TGIT - Wine, Concerts, Art & Music!!

Good morning everybody...one more day 'til the holiday weekend...alleluia!!!

Don't miss out on the weekly wine tasting at Cork and Bottle (3700 Orleans ) about 5:00 pm in Mid-City and tasting is free!!!  And be sure to stop by the Crescent City Farmer's Market and patronize local Louisiana vendors with fresh veggies, seafood and more! 

Need a little culture and music? You gotta go to the show at the Ogden Southern Museum of Art - better known as Ogden after Hours.  The concert starts up at 6:00 pm. with Gypsy Elise and the Royal Blues their style is defined as blues, funk, and torch, and they are sure to put on an unforgettable show.......so come on down for some music, culture, fun and don't forget to try out this month's signature drink the "Porch Punch" it is really good!

Go hang out at City Park this evening for The Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series with the Symphony Chorus of New Orleans. The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out so it's a good thing...$8 for adults and $3 for children.

It's the One Year Anniversary of the MFrancis Gallery (604 Julia) - Come celebrate with a toast tonight - from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Over the past year they have traveled from their first location in the upper 9th ward at the Idea Village Entergy Innovation Center to the Historic Arts District of New Orleans. It's going to be a lovely event with entertainment by Nationally Acclaimed Jazz Violinist Richmond Punch!

The Columns Hotel (3811 St. Charles Ave.) has Freddy Omar at 8:00 pm...come out to enjoy some fantastic Latin music!!

Concerts, Culture and Free Music at Chickie's!

Good Morning Everybody - lots of good things going on to help you with your hump day!

Concert and Culture:

The Wednesdays on the Point concert series continues this afternoon in Algiers and runs through August 10th  from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., and of course, admission is FREE (There's gonna be a special concert on July 4th - click the link for more info!)...Tonight head to the Algiers Ferry Dock (200Morgan St.) for Luther Kent and The Mumbles - remember you can take the ferry over for FREE - it's a beautiful ride across the river! 

Experience an evening of cultural indulgences at the JW Marriott Lobby Lounge (614 Canal St.) this evening from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. tonight!  The event will feature original quilted fabric collages by Dr. Sara "Saharah" Hollis, Director of the Master of Arts in Museum Studies Program at SUNU.  The theme is "A Life in Fabrics-Forty Years of Creating Beauty with Cloth".  There's also music by multi instrumentalist, Tony Seville and a spirit tasting with complimentary hors d'oeuvres.  Parking is available at a special event rate of $5 on Common Street.

Wednesday Evening Music

There's good stuff going on in Mid-City!

Go by Chickie Wah Wah (2828 Canal) for  an amazing evening of music tonight at 8:00 pm!!  The Believers bring their roots sounds and to Chickie's for a FREE weekday show.  Founding members Craig Aspen & Cyd Frazzini formed the band ten years ago in Seattle amid the Alt. Country - No Depression boom and have been recording and performing ever since.  Teaming up with former members of Tribe Nunzio and other New Orleans music luminaries, they've stayed true to their Country/Soul sound.  Of their latest release ‘Lucky You’ , Britain’s Rock n Reel Magazine wrote The Believers are “What Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three might’ve sounded like if they’d jammed with The White Stripes.”  You're not going to want to miss this one!! 

Stay in Mid-City and head on down to Banks Street Bar (4401 Banks) for some Major Bacon and some FREE BLTs - tonight at 10:00 pm...you can never get enough of the bacon!!

If you're hanging out in Broadmoor (and if not, get on over there!!) You can get some yummy food and great music tonight over at The Rendon Inn (4501 Eve Street) it's singer/songwriter Marc Stone tonight at 7:00 pm!!

Looking for some dinner and then some music for dessert?  Rock 'N Bowl (3016 S. Carrollton) can help you out!  Get an entree' over at Ye Olde College Inn and then get a half price ticket to the show right next door at Rock N' Bowl....Tonight they've got Swing-A-Roux at 8:30 pm - and you'll be dancing the night away!

Veggies, Sushi Fest and Mo' Music!

Happy Tuesday Everybody!!

You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even grab some lunch!  Susan Spicer's Mondo is cooking each Tuesday in June at the Market.....on the menu today: Watermelon gazpacho, smothered okra with rice and fried onions, and some sort of delicious fig dessert.. ....yummy!!

There's some good music this afternoon at 2:30 pm over at the Old Metairie Library (2350 Metairie Rd.)....take the kids and the whole family to hear Ricardo Crespo and Sol Brasil...you and the kiddies will be dancin' the afternoon away!

Looking for some sushi, wine and beer?  Well then head on over to Cork & Bottle (3700 Orleans) for the Sushi Festival - 6:30 pm tonight!!  Nosh your way through a selection of nigiri sushi, maki, and sashimi, as you sip on crisp whites, delicious beers, exotic and domestic, and some exciting new sakes! Today is the NOLA Pride Parade and Block Party!  The parade is FREE and open to anyone wanting to show their pride!  The parade line-up is at 11:00 am at Harrahs Casino on Canal Street and the parade begins at noon.

Art in the Park, Fat Harry's Turns 40 and NOLA Pride!

Happy Saturday Everybody - Lots of good stuff going on today!!

It's the Arts Market of New Orleans at Palmer Park (corner of S. Claiborne and S. Carrollton from 10 am to 4:00 pm today!!  Free and open to the public!  The Market has the region’s best artists, live music and good food and it's the 4th annual “Fun in the Sun” summer series with a Latin Fiesta!  In the Kids Tent, Patrice Fisher & Arpa with the Garifuna Connection presents the culture and music of the Garifuna, Central Americans of West African descent to kids of all ages at 10:30 am. Make Awesome Aztec Masks for the craft project of the day after the show.  Plus live music with Live performances in the Music Tent include Riccardo Crespo & Sol Brasil at 1:00 pm, followed by Latin jazz by The Dan DeSandro Quartet at 2:30 pm. .. food and drink from  your favorite local restaurants, and exciting and educational kid's activities.

Looking for your forever friend this weekend??  There's two places where you can find them!!!  Head on over to Jefferson Feed Pet and Garden Center (4421 Jeff Hwy.) for an Adoption Option!!  LA/SPCA volunteers will have cats, dogs, puppies and kittens and they'll even be Care Cadet graduates for adoption!!  Come on down between 11:00 and 3:00 pm today!!  And if you're in Mid-City Fetch (3536 Toulouse) will have lots of adorable animals from the Plaquemines Parish Welfare Society today from 11:30 to 3:00 pm today!

Then for more adult fun head on over to Fat Harry's (corner of Napoleon and St. Charles Ave.) for their big 40th Anniversary Celebration!!!  The festivities kick off at 11 a.m.  Starting at 4:00 pm Fat Harry's will roll back prices to the 1970s with $1 drafts and $2 Stoli cocktails.   Each hour, the Stoli drinks get a little more expensive to reflect four decades of inflation, until at 7 p.m. they'll go for the current price of $6. There will also be games, prizes and music kicks up at 4:00 pm too - with Bacon and Flow Tribe.  Dress in your favorite outfit from your favorite decade in the last 40 years!!

It's NOLA Pride Weekend with a weekend full of great activities!!
  • It's Family Day in City Park with the Family Day Picnic which starts at 11:00 am...There will be a bubble machine from HRC-New Orleans, Stonewall Democrats providing rainbow popsicles, game booths, and face painting.

    • Field 1 is located on Stadium Drive, behind Storyland and near to Tad Gormley Stadium.
    • Parking - People can park all along Roosevelt Mall Drive and walk across the outfield to get to the field, in addition to turning on Stadium Drive and parking behind the field. with a block party, parade and street festival

French Market Fun, Art, Wine and Lot's o' Music!

Sneak out of work a little early and head on down to the French Quarter and the French Market for "Fridays at the French Market"!  Look for the Bud Light Stage at Gov. Nicholls between the French and the Flea Markets - You've got music with Sweet Jones at 4:00 pm, and stay on for Flowtribe at 5:00 pm - the Markets will be open for all your food, drink and shopping fun!

Get your Art on over at the McKenna Museum of African American Art (2003 Carondelet) from 6:00 to 9:00 pm - Tonight is the opening reception for Hue Orleans: Ayo Scott's Eye View.  Experience the moment when classic New Orleans sites and happenings come alive through the psychedelic eyes of New Orleans native Ayo Y. Scott!!

This is always a fun way to start off the weekend.  It's the weekly wine tasting over at Cork & Bottle (Orleans at Moss St.) - today they have a wine flight with flavorful picks from the staff over at C & B... Come taste some great, affordable bottles today at the FREE tasting from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

And you can double your wine tasting fun!  Check out Swirl located on Ponce de Leon right off Esplanade and enjoy a FREE wine tasting at 6:00 pm. Once you've tasted one of their excellent choices you'll be sure to be buy a bottle!

St. John's Eve, Wine, Concerts and More!

If you're looking for some wine to taste in a unique setting you need to head out to the New Orleans Fairgrounds from 6:00 to 8:00 pm for the first "Tastings at the Track - Sippin' into Summer" event of the year sponsored by Dorignacs.  Attendees will have the opportunity to taste a collection of cool whites, elegant reds, splendid sparklings and refreshing rosés from around the world.  This casual, reception style tasting will also feature a selection of cheeses and wine experts who will discuss and answer wine related questions.  Tickets are $25 per person and are available at Dorignac's (710 Veterans Blvd in Metairie). Tickets will be available at the door if the event is not sold-out.

Don't forget today is St. John's Eve...so celebrate this evening with the annual St. John's Eve Headwashing Ceremony on the footbridge over Bayou St. John (near Cabrini High School) from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.  There will be a headwashing ceremony (form of Vodou baptism) dedicated to Marie Laveau Wear all white and bring a white scarf or rag for your head (It will get dirty.)   Also, be sure to bring an offering for Marie Laveau; she likes flowers, blue and white candles, Creole foods, hair ribbons and hair dressing supplies, or Vodou-esque items -  Voodoo dolls, potions, gris-gris bags, or images of Marie Laveau.

I made a boo boo yesterday...sorry, about that. THIS evening at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (925 Camp St.) - Collecting 101: A Conversation with Collectors: Sydney Besthoff, Jill Dupre, Josh Mayer and Will Erickson.  How does one become an art collector?  This panel will give a first-hand account how these four collectors started, and how their collections grew and changed (and are still changing).  Questions will address the basics of collecting—such as dealing with a gallery or artist, and funding—to the more personal, such as why they collect what they do. Tuesday with Veggies, Culture & Lots of Music!

Happy Tuesday Everybody!

You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even grab some lunch!  Susan Spicer's Mondo is cooking each Tuesday in June at the Market.....on the menu: Japanese noodle bowls with chili glazed pork belly and pickled shiitakes, grilled peach and arugula salad with shaved Parmesean, pecans and cane vinaigarette, and berry shortcakes.....yummy!!

This evening at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (925 Camp St.) - Collecting 101: A Conversation with Collectors: Sydney Besthoff, Jill Dupre, Josh Mayer and Will Erickson.  How does one become an art collector?  This panel will give a first-hand account how these four collectors started, and how their collections grew and changed (and are still changing).  Questions will address the basics of collecting—such as dealing with a gallery or artist, and funding—to the more personal, such as why they collect what they do. It's the Bouligny Lecture Series with Thomas E. Chavez this evening from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the Historic New Orleans Collection (533 Royal)...the Francisco Bouligny Lecture, is an annual program examining the shared history between Spain and Louisiana.  Tonight's theme is “Following the Paper Trail: The Daily Life of a Spanish Colonial Document” with Alfred E. Lemmon, Director of the Williams Research Center at The Historic New Orleans Collection.  Tonight will explore the journey that the documents in “The Threads of Memory” would have taken through harsh frontier conditions and how they might have survived for four centuries. A fascinating history of fragile paper materials, it reveals the shipboard life that the colonists had to endure, the amazing varied landscapes that they had to travel and the perilous ocean journeys.  This lecture is FREE and open to the public.

Celebratin' the Circus, the Square, Bootsy and Birthdays!!

If you're Downtown check out the Circus Parade!!  Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey present The Crescent City Summer Celebration Parade at 11 a.m. at Girod Street and Loyola Avenue. The route will run from the New Orleans Arena, down Girod, left on Baronne, then up Poydras to end at Loyola.

Come on down to Lafayette Square for Wednesday at the Square for the last concert of the series!!  There will be crafts, food and libations and of course music - Cyril Neville and Monk Boudreaux plus Gravy get things kickin' this evening at 5:00 pm!

Swirl Wine Bar & Market (3143 Ponce de Leon) is turning 5 today - so come help them celebrate!!  They're throwing a little party tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  They'll have a case of Champagne graciously donated by their wonderful purveyors, and a little birthday cake to share!!

Vieux to Do, Stompers, Camo Fest, Porch Crawlin' and More!!

Happy Saturday, and there's lots going on today!!

It's World Naked Bike Ride hosted by The World Naked Bike Ride's New Orleans Chapter and they meet up today at 11 a.m. over at Markey Park in the Bywater, and they'll be an after party at the Country Club (634 Louisa)!! Their mission: "to peacefully expose the vulnerability of cyclists, humanity and nature in the face of cars, aggression, consumerism and non-renewable energy." Be lookin' for some naked folks all around the Quarters this mornin'!

And of course it's Vieux to Do this weekend, with not one, not two, but three festivals in the Quarter!!

Okay..after eating all that amazing food you need a way to walk it off, there's a couple ways you can do it this evening!!

Be a 610 Stomper for a day - It's the Stomper Ball Crawl!! With their signature 'staches, powder blue shorts and blazing red members-only jackets, New Orleans' favorite all-male dance organization the 610 Stompers will parade through the Mid-City area with their fans for the 610 Stompers Ball Crawl 2: Stompin on the Bayou from 4 to 8 p.m., today!! The crawl will end at Bayou Beer Garden, capping the evening with an epic after-party featuring live music and food. Proceeds from the event will support several local nonprofit organizations serving New Orleans. Registration is $35 and includes free beer at each location; event T-shirt and registration gifts; entrance into fun contests and the after-party; as well as bragging rights to say you danced with the 610 Stompers! Registration will be held 2 to 4 p.m. at Mid-City Yacht Club, 440 S. St. Patrick St., where attendees can pick up their wristbands and T-shirts. This is also the time to start practicing!

And you don't want to miss Camo Fest 4 in the Quarter - the fun starts up at 8:00 pm at the Tropical Isle on Bourbon and carries on 'til midnight (or later)!!! Camo Fest defies description, but here you go...It's a pub crawl. It's a scavenger hunt. It's a way of life. The Fest has no political affiliation or aspirations or commentary to offer. Wear camo. Have fun. That's an order. Camo is mandatory. Cash is pretty much mandatory. The following are optional but helpful: PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, parade throws (beads, dog tags), cameras and cell phones. The nearest bar to the rally point is The Alpine. Get a drink from there or bring your own to the start. And don't forget No realistic looking weapons please!

And there's another crawl!!! It's the Faubourg St. John Porch Crawl this evening from 4pm - 7pm with admission $30 in advance $40 day of - Stopping at 5 of the "hoods" nicest porches!!

Jazz, Vino and Lots of Mid-City Fun!

Yea for Friday!!

Lookin' to hang out on the Bayou and drink some delicious wine...then go no further than the Pitot House on Moss Street for Vino on the Bayou tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 pm!!  This event is always a great way to kick off the evening. This is always a fun way to start off the weekend.  It's the weekly wine tasting over at Cork & Bottle (Orleans at Moss St.) - today they have a wine flight with the Hahn Winery... Come taste six great, affordable bottles today at the FREE tasting from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

And you can double your wine tasting fun!  Check out Swirl located on Ponce de Leon right off Esplanade and enjoy a FREE wine tasting at 6:00 pm. Once you've tasted one of their excellent choices you'll be sure to be buy a bottle!

This week the Second Annual New Orleans Traditional Jazz Camp Swings in the French Quarter...there are some great free events! You gotta go to the show at the Ogden Southern Museum of Art - better known as Ogden after Hours.  The concert starts up at 6:00 pm. with Sarah Quintana an up and coming New Orleans jazz vocalist with a distinct French influence in her work, Sarah puts on an unforgettable performance...so come on down for some music, culture and fun (and you're going to want to try the signature drink for June - "The Porch Punch" it is 'um 'um good!!

Go hang out at City Park this evening for The Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series with New Orleans Moonshiners and Cristina Perez. The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out..so....it's a good thing...$8 for adults and $3 for children.

A Galactic Wednesday, Fun in Lakeview and Art!!

Sip on a margarita from the Beacon of Hope Beverage Booth or grab a beer from St. Dominic's. Harbor Community Church and First Baptist Church of New Orleans will also have great activities for the little ones.

There's a Gallery Opening tonight for Mardiclaw and my buddy, Will Smith, Jr. tonight at the Crescent City Brewhouse (527 Decatur) from 6:00 to 9:00 pm..New works from Mardiclaw featuring skellies, architecture, and Mardi Gras parades and Indians....even some local "celebrities" and affordable, colorful paintings...Mardi Gras paintings and giclee's from Will Smith, Jr.....Will is a regular at the Jean Bragg Gallery on Julia, and is the curator for "Off White Linen".  These two will be enjoying some brews, and noshing with friends.  Won't you join them both? Biggest Second Line Ever...and More!!

Happy Tuesday Everybody,

You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even get some lunch!  Susan Spicer's Mondo is cooking each Tuesday in June at the Market.....on the menu: Swiss chard dolmades with local feta and heirloom tomato salad, chilled buttermilk-cucumber soup with pickled local blueberries, and blueberry scone with lemon curd... ....yummy!!

Tonight New Orleans Traditional Jazz Camp is hoping for the Biggest Second Line Ever!!! Trad camp for adults is hosting a second line open to everyone at 7:00 pm starting at the Bourbon Orleans hotel in the 700 block of Orleans Ave.  Be a part of this history making event. Bring umbrellas, handkerchiefs, napkins...whatever makes you second line happier!!  This could be a Guinness world record, or the opportunity to consume a mass quantities of Guinness beer!

Looking to get your art on this evening...well we have just the thing for you!!  It's the first ever Twirling Ballerina Takes Center Stages at "Bottles and Brushes with Degas" at the Degas House (2306 Esplanade)!   Beginning at 6:30 PM, this one of a kind event provides artists and non-artists the opportunity to come and be inspired where Degas lived.  They’ll supply the paints, aprons, and brushes and  even one COMPLIMENTARY adult beverage. Celebrate the work of Homer Plessy with Plessy Day 2011 tonight starting at 6:00 pm. The celebration will begin in NOCCA's parking lot (2800 Chartres Street ) with a live performance by Carl LeBlanc and Jonathan Bloom. Guests will then be welcomed into NOCCA's Ellis Marsalis Jazz Studio for a reading and short talk by A.P. Tureaud Jr. and Dr. Rachel Emanuel, co-authors of A More Noble Cause. Together they tell the remarkable story of one civil rights lawyer's lifelong fight for racial justice in Jim Crow Louisiana. The book will be available for purchase from The Community Book Center. Light fare will be provided by Marriott New Orleans.  Admission to this event is free, and open to the public.

The "Acme Oyster House, World Oyster Eating Competition" will celebrate the 100 Anniversary of the revered New Orleans institution. Weekend performances on the Event's Stage include the James Andrews Band at 11:45a.m.-12:45p.m., Acme Oyster Eating Contests at1:00p.m.-1:45p.m., Big Sam's Funky Nation at 2:00p.m.-3:30p.m., Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters at 4:00p.m.-5:30p.m., Irma Thomas at 6:00p.m. -7:30p.m. Be sure to click on the above link for complete details!

Today is the Familia, Salud Y Vida Health and Wellness Festival at St. Anna's Episcopal Church. today from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. The Festival will promote healthy lifestyle choices and celebrate the culture and diversity of our city. Free services include blood pressure and diabetes screenings, HIV testing, acupuncture and massage, hurricane preparation, food stamps and Medicaid information and much much more! Entertainment for the Festival will feature live music by Ovi-g and the Froggies, dance and drumming by Grupo Garífuna Renovación 6, Capoeira demonstrations by Grupo Maculelé, performances by Ballet Foklórica Nicaragüense Cosmapa, and a special presentation by Jose Torres-Tama. The Festival will also offer fresh homemade food and drink from various Latin American countries and a chance to win one of our fabulous raffle gift baskets. Oyster Lovin' Saturday and More!!

It's another fun Saturday in New Orleans..so go out there enjoy!!!!

It's time for the first annual New Orleans Oyster Festival with great Louisiana music, a cultural oyster tent, the finest local cuisine, and competitions for oyster shucking and the largest oyster. The "Acme Oyster House, World Oyster Eating Competition" will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the revered New Orleans institution. Weekend performances on the Event's Stage include:

  • Oyster Shucking Contest - 1:00p.m. - 1:45p.m.
  • Bucktown All-Stars - 2:00p.m. - 3:30p.m.
  • Bag of Donuts - 4:00p.m. - 5:30p.m.
  • John Popper & The Duskray Troubadours - 6:00p.m. - 7:30p.m.

Tonight is the WYES International Beer Tasting....this a great one for all you beer lovers out there...You will be in beer heaven!!  Sample over 200 beers, ales, lagers and more....This event is at the UNO Lakefront Arena and goes from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  Tickets are $30 for groups of for seniors and groups of six or more, $35 for individual and $45 at the door...you really can't miss this beer event!
