Baker was one of the first rock musicians to realize the potential of African music, and decided that it would be a rewarding musical experience to travel to Nigeria over land across the Sahara desert – a journey that would lead him into a number of adventures, including a number of legendary jam sessions with his friend at that time, Fela Kuti, pioneer of Afrobeat music. This film by Tony Palmer follows Baker’s odyssey as he makes his journey and finally arrives in Nigeria to set up his studio, which would run successfully through the 1970s as a facility for both local and western musicians (Paul McCartney’s Wings recorded Band On The Run there). (1973, 53 min.)

Happy St. Joseph's Day!

March 19th marks the Catholic celebration of St. Joseph's Day where Catholic New Orleanians construct elaborate altars in honor of this saint. The tradition, commemorating the relief St. Joseph provided during a famine in Sicily, began in the late 1800’s when Sicilian immigrants settled in New Orleans. Today, St. Joseph’s day is not just for Italian-Americans. Every year, this celebration offers New Orleans natives and visitors a chance to share food with others and for believers, a way to express gratitude for any sort of fortune in their lives.  Stop by and celebrate one of the most unique New Orleans traditions - here's a list of some of the altars around town today!

Musical Movie Fun!

"Musically Speaking:" free screening of Sparkle by Sam O'Steen tonight at the Antenna Gallery (3718 St. Claude Ave.) at 7:00 pm - Sparkle was recently remade with Whitney Houston and released in 2012, this 1976 feature film with the same name as a rags-to-riches (and, for some, rags again) story of three teenage singers in Harlem who form a girl group in the late 1950's. Starring Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, and Philip Michael Thomas, and featuring original music by Curtis Mayfield, the low-budget original has since reached cult classic status since its successful mid-1970s release.
MUSICALLY SPEAKING is a series of music-themed movie and documentary screenings, curated/hosted by DJ Soul Sister, and co-presented by Press Street, Charitable Film Network, WWOZ FM, and the N.O. African American Museum. Free admission and refreshments. Contact info@press-street.com
