Gratis Spirits!

Fredrick "Fred" Booker Noe III
This Thursday Bill and I will be attending one of the nation’s premier spirits debates at the Bourbon House in the French Quarter - The Great Whisk(e)y Debate™ and Dinner (this is going to be much better than a political debate)! As part of  the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Dinner Series we'll be joining seventh generation Jim Beam master distiller, Fredrick “Fred” Booker Noe III as he goes head-to-head to debate the merits of Bourbon whiskey against an extraordinary group of ambassadors representing Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch, Canadian Club Whisky and Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey.

This promises to be a most spirited debate - Can't wait to learn about the rich heritage of each country’s spirits and sample whisk(e)y and whisk(e)y cocktails paired with an amazing meal from the Bourbon House. After trying out these delicious libations guests of the dinner will get to judge who wins. Keep you posted on which whisk(e)y wins the debate, and it sounds like an awful lot of fun getting to decide!

Check out some of these cocktails we'll be sampling - oh my - it's going to be a good time!

Absolutely Cajun!

Welcome Libation Lovers to the first of my regular series of reports from The City That Sobriety Forgot.  Here we will talk about all things from the world of intoxicology that are floating around in my mind and answer any and all questions you can find in yours.

According to Drinksmixer.com, there are at least 45 different flavored vodkas from 30 different brands. Instead of debating the merits – or lack thereof – of this plethora of potent potables (perhaps a topic for a future installment of Gratis Spirits), allow me to share my recipe that appeared in Absolut’s Cocktail Book – Limited Edition. I use 2 flavored vodkas plus a delicious New Orleans’ produced flavored rum. This is Louisiana drink for sure, plenty strong with a hint of spicy. Enjoy!

ABSOLUTELY CAJUN
1 - Absolut Vanilla
½ - Absolut Peppar
1 ½ - Old New Orleans Cajun Spice Rum
½ - Chambord
½ - Fresh Lemon Juice
Shake with ice & strain into chilled cocktail glass
Garnish – Orange Twist, preferably a Plaquemines Parish satsuma.

Drink and be merry,
Bill deTurk – Master Intoxicolgist May 26, 2011
