Art in the Park, Fishin' Rodeos, & Lots of Music!

Happy Saturday Everybody!

It's the Arts Market of New Orleans at Palmer Park (corner of S. Claiborne and S. Carrollton from 10 am to 4:00 pm today!!  Free and open  to the public!  The Market has the region’s best artists, music and great food.  Plus live music with Live performances in the Music Tent include New Orleans Moonshiners at 1:00 pm, followed by Oscar and the Blues Cats at  2:30 pm. .. food and drink from  your  favorite local restaurants, and exciting and educational kid's activities.

If you're looking for a road trip head down to Grand Isle for the International Tarpon Rodeo...This is the oldest fishing rodeo in the U.S., and the rodeo is making it's big return since the BP oil spill! The festival runs from 11:00 to 10:00 pm today with food, merchandise and exhibits. Children's crab races take place at 2:00 pm and be sure to stay on for music with the Wisegus at 6:00 pm! Lookin' for some more great music this afternoon...then head over to the Louisiana Music Factory (210 Decatur)  for two great in-store shows!! The Yat Pack at 2:00 pm followed by Eric Lindell at 3:00 pm...and don't while you're there pick up some great CDs for your collection!

Tonight is www.nolamusicnow.com's Launch Party Showcase at 10:00 pm over at Southport Music Hall & Deck (200 Monticello Ave).  Nolamusicnow is the brainchild of three life-long friends that started out as a facebook page called NOLA Music. The idea that music feeds the souls led to the creation of a calendar that covers live local music throughout the greater metropolitan New. Orleans area. Over 250 venues and as many as 2.000 events are included in the calendar each month.  To celebrate the launch of the new website, nolamusicnow decided what better way to highlight local music than with a musical showcase. Check out the great music tonight with Shamarr Allen & The Underdawgs, Credo Blues Society, and Funk Pocket - All this fun for the low low cover of only $10!!

TGIF w/French Market Fun, Wine, Art & Free Hubig's Pies!

The weekend is here!!

Start your weekend in the Quarter with Fridays at the French Market featuring Pierre Pichon's Gypsy Swing Trio and Washboard Chaz Blues Trio from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. The concerts are a colorful invitation to locals to rediscover the historic Market while taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the new Farmers Market eateries, as well as new and familiar Flea Market vendors showcasing clothing, handmade jewelry, artwork, photography, candles and international and local crafts. It's going to be a fun time!

Need a little art, culture and music? You gotta go to the show at the Ogden Southern Museum of Art (925 Camp St.) - better known as Ogden after Hours.  The concert starts up at 6:00 pm. with Creede Williams...Raised on Ray Charles and Van Morrison by gospel singers, the musical gumbo of Creede Williams’ childhood make his two albums a feast for the ears.  A child of Southeastern Oklahoma, the talented lyricist sings an emotionally charged, but honest story.  Williams’ soulful vocals and catchy pop/country guitar move his audience to a foot-tapping and hand-clapping dance...so come on down for some music, culture and fun - don't miss it!!

Go hang out at City Park this evening for The Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series with The Gay Men's Chorus!  The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out..so....it's a good thing...$8 for adults and $3 for children.

There's some good music happenin' over on St. Claude tonight - so check it out!  The Hi-Ho Lounge (2239 St. Claude) has the Stooges Brass Band at 10:00 pm....and the Saturn Bar (3067 St. Clauce) has the Parishioners at 10:00 pm....hit one show early and one show late and make both!

Concerts, Trivia and Fashion!

Show Off your Talent on Tuesday!

You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even grab some lunch!  St. James Cheese Company is fixing up some great food each Tuesday in July at the Market.....on the menu today:House smoked pastrami, Raclette cheese and pickled zucchini on ciabatta, watermelon salad with tomato, cucumber, feta and mint, and chilled beet soup with creme fraiche.....yummy!!

The Trinity Artist Series continues tonight at Trinity Episcopal Church (1329 Jackson Ave.) with "Organ & Labyrinth" with Albinas Prizgintas on the 5000 pipe Trinity tracker organ. The program includes some of the greatest music ever written ranging from Classical Baroque to vintage rock and popular tunes. The concert is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and is FREE!

Do you want to be the next Stage Door Idol? Then you need to come on down to the World War II Museum Stage Door Canteen (945 Magazine St.) for the Competition - Who will be the next Stage Door Idol? Tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 pm!! It's a 40's themed talent competition. Watch as area hopefuls vie for the title of the next Stage Door Idol by performing hits of the war years for celebrity judges. Monday - Cocktails and Music!

Happy Monday Everybody!

Hope everyone had their fill of cocktails this weekend (I think I did - and what a wonderful time it was!)...here's some good music to get your week off to a great start!

Monday Night Music

If you're Uptown - It's never too hot for some porch sippin' over at the Columns Hotel (3811 St. Charles)....It's David Doucet of Beausoleil fame at 8:00 pm tonight!

Head on down to Mid-City and to the Banks Street Bar (4401 Banks) about 10:00 pm for the N'awlins Johnnys and FREE red beans tonight!

And If you're lookin' for some bluegrass music tonight you don't have to go too far to find it....Check out the Hi Ho Lounge (2239 St. Claude) and the Bluegrass Pickin' Party at 8:00 pm...there's no cover and cheap and yummy red beans (veggie red beans too)!

Music & Market Workshops, Honeybee Tryouts and a Swingin' Sunday!

Happy Sunday Everybody - had a little computer break yesterday, but hope everyone had a wonderful Saturday!

The dog days of Summer have slowed things down a little bit, but you can still find some fun stuff going on around town!

You can get an early start with the kids at Tipitina's (501 Napoleon) with the Sunday Music Workshop form 1:00 to 3:30 pm....Tony Dagradi, Roland Guerin and Johnny Vidacovich perform at the workshop and musicians are asked to bring their own instruments.  Admission is FREE and open to all ages (so, that means you!).

And continue the fun with the French Market Fare Program with the Hollygrove Market at 2:00 pm.  The Market and Farm discusses local ingredients, urban farming practices, demonstrates how to use various products in creative ways, and how to preserve season produce.  So come on out and learn some fun stuff and go shopping in the French Market (located between Ursulines and Governor Nicholls Street) - what a fun way to spend your Sunday afternoon!!

It's the Honeybees Final Audition, and you can show your support!!  If you want to cheer on your favorite New Orleans Hornet Honeybee then head on down to the House of Blues (225 Decatur) for 3:00 pm (doors open at 2:30) to cheer on the 34 finalist, and your favorite, competing for about 20 spots on the 2011-12 Honeybee Squad!  The event includes performances by DJ Jermaine Quiz and saxophonist James Martin, with drink specials too - admission is FREE!!!

    Go hang out at City Park this evening for The Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series with The New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra!  The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out..so....it's a good thing...$8 for adults and $3 for children.

    A Toast to Tales!!

    Good Morning Everybody!  Lots of good things going on today!

    Veggies and Ice Cream!!

    You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even grab some lunch!  St. James Cheese Company is fixing up some great food each Tuesday in July at the Market.....on the menu today: Chilled summer squash vichyssoise, heirloom tomato panzanella salad, and capicola, agrodolce onion & Pecorino sandwiches on ciabatta....yummy!!

    Today the Omni Royal Orleans (621 St. Louis St.) is once again treating travelers to a summertime soirée celebrating National Ice Cream Day.  Guests are invited to a complimentary ice cream social - complete with a Design-Your-Own Sundae Bar, on from 4 to 6 p.m.  Through a partnership with Häagen-Dazs, the luxury hotel will serve rich, vanilla and chocolate flavored ice cream along with toppings such as brownie chunks, crumbled chocolate chip cookies, Butterfingers, Heath Bars, M&Ms, butterscotch, strawberry, caramel and chocolate fudge sauces, pecans, chocolate chips and cherries, as well as toppings cherished by locals.  Chef Rene Bajeux will add a unique local twist with the addition of praline, spicy pecans and king cake toppings.  Another yum!!

    The Trinity Artist Series continues tonight at Trinity Episcopal Church (1329 Jackson Ave.) with "Organ & Labyrinth" with Albinas Prizgintas on the 5000 pipe Trinity tracker organ. The program includes some of the greatest music ever written ranging from Classical Baroque to vintage rock and popular tunes. The concert is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and is FREE!

    Ooompah Pah Pah and Some Beneficial Fun!

    Head on down to the Deutsches Haus (1023 Ridgewood Dr.) at 1:00 pm for a day of German Fun! There will be entertainment by Lorelei and Schatzi with special guest Gary Trumet of the "Sauerkaruts" - It's going to be fun filled day of accordion music, dancing, Gernam Volkmusic, Polka and lots of oompah pah pah!!     A Night at the Museum, Drive-Ins & Some Crazy Good Music!

    This is always a fun way to kick things off.  It's the weekly wine tasting over at Cork & Bottle (Orleans at Moss St.) - today they have a wine flight with wine picks from the C & B staff!  Come taste some great, affordable bottles today at the FREE tasting from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

    Hemingway, Running Waiters, Swingin' and Art!

    Good Morning - hope you're having a great Sunday, and here's some good stuff going on today!

    If you haven't had enough of the Running of the Bulls Fiesta - No worries, there's a San Fermin Closing Party this morning at Ernst Cafe' (600 S. Peters). The party will feature a tapas brunch menu and the third annual Ernest Hemingway Talent Contests - including  a Hemingway look-alike, costume, and a skit contest - all starting up at 11:30 am.  Admission if FREE and open to the public!

    And continue the fun with the First French Market Fare Program with Ann Tuennerman from Tales of the Cocktail, Liz Williams from the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, and music from One Mind Brass Band.  Every Sunday starting today at 2:00 pm, the French Market will host a series of free programs that highlight the cuisine and culinary culture of New Orleans. Expect to see cooking demos, food conversations, and musical entertainment at the French Market Fare stage in the Farmers Market, located between Ursulines and Governor Nicholls Streets

    Keep on going with the French Market Waiters Race at 4:00 pm - The annual race begins at Washington Artillery Park (across from Jackson Square) and ends at the French Market Arch (Ursulines Street).  The race kicks off with local waiters carrying trays of beverages and speed walking their way to the finish line for the Bastille Day commemoration.

    And if you want to dance the afternoon away head on down to the National World War II Museum (945 Magazine) for this FREE event the Summer Sunday Swing Series!  Professional swing dancers will provide coaching for dancers at all levels while your swinging to the sounds of Swingaroux - all today from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.  

    It's your last chance this weekend to celebrate the closing exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection (533 Royal St.).  Today marks the final day for The Threads of Memory: Spain and the United States (El Hilo de la Memoria: España y los Estados Unidos), the traveling exhibition chronicling Spain’s discovery and colonization of the New World. Before the materials leave American soil and return to the Archive of the Indies in Seville, The Collection will host closing receptions with Galvez Riverfront Restaurant today.  The receptions will take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and guests will have an opportunity to view the exhibition and enjoy Spanish-Creole fare by chef Laura Cedillo.  The reception and the exhibition are FREE and open to the public.

    Fun with Festivals, Block Parties & Receptions!

    Happy Saturday Everybody - (hope you didn't get gored by one of those crazy bulls this morning!!)

    Here's some fun stuff going on today!

    Celebrate Hispanic Summer Fest in Kenner Laketown (where Williams Blvd. meets the Lake)!! This fun event celebrates Latin heritage and its rich culture, cuisine and music. The Fest is From 3:00 to 11:00 p.m., and features activities for the entire family. Live music, dances and crafts are all on the agenda. The festival food will include Hispanic cuisine and refreshments. The musical lineup includes Fito Blanko — Team Pitbull, Monchy y Nathalia and La Gran Banda, all from Honduras. Everyone is invited to the FREE fest - but please leave your ice chests at home.

    This afternoon is the Feast of St. Henry Reunion and Block Party at St. Henry's Church (812 Gen Pershing).  The reunion begins with a vigil Mass at 3:00 pm and stay on for the party with FREE food, sno-balls, Lucky Dogs, beer and soft drinks....and music by J Monque'D Blues Band from 4:00  to 7:00 pm.  It is a FREE event, but your donations will be appreciated - go out and have a good time!

    Celebrate Bastille Day with a block party over on Esplanade and Ponce de Leon!  This annual celebration hosted by the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association kicks off  at 5:00 pm with food, wine, and of course music by Cindy Scott and Don Vappie and the Tupelo Honeys and The High Ground Drifters....Make sure to be there by 5:30 pm for the singing of La Marseillaise with Cindy Scott - "Allons Enfants!!"

    Head on to the Quarter today for lots of fun!!  The Louisiana Music Factory (210 Decatur) has two FREE in-store shows with Olga at 2:00 pm, and Scott Schmidt at 3:00 pm - don't forget to buy a CD while your there...they have the best selection in town!

    Running of the Bulls!

    You don't want to miss the 12 Hour Countdown to the Running of the Bulls at the 12 Bar!!  Get your pre-party tonight with $3 Sangria, Mojitos, and Cuba Libres and NO COVER!!!  The official start time is 8:00 pm with Brown Improv taking the stage at 8:30, followed by New Orleans artists The Local Skank!  A late night of SKA and libations await those brave enough to take the challenge.  Stay through the night and into the morning, but be prepared for those bulls!!

    And I usually do events the day before they're happening, but I have to make an exception, because we got an early one tomorrow!!   El Encierro (Running of the Bulls), will again commence at precisely 8 a.m. on tomorrow at Ernst Cafe (600 S. Peters Street).  This is a NEW starting point, so please plan accordingly.  This FREE EVENT will feature hundreds of Roller Bulls from around the country led by our own Big Easy Roller Girls who will chase down and "gore" thousands of corredores (runners) dressed in the traditional white clothes with red sashes and neckerchiefs (traditional clothes not required, but encouraged).

    El Encierro is a "run at your own risk" event. All ages are welcome, but participants under 12 and participants with strollers ARE REQUIRED TO USE THE SIDEWALK. Arrive early to view the Procession of San Fermin at 7:30 a.m.  Following El Encierro will be the Post-Encierro Fiesta at Ernst Cafe (600 S. Peters St.) and 12 Bar (608 Fulton St.), featuring Latin food, sangria, Marques de Caceres wines, Stella Artois beer, refreshments, DJs, and live music by Vivaz.  This event is also free and open to the public.

    There's good stuff going on in Mid-City!

    Go by Chickie Wah Wah (2828 Canal) for  an amazing evening of music tonight at 8:00 pm!!  The Believers bring their roots sounds and to Chickie's for a FREE weekday show.  Founding members Craig Aspen & Cyd Frazzini formed the band ten years ago in Seattle amid the Alt. Country - No Depression boom and have been recording and performing ever since.  Teaming up with former members of Tribe Nunzio and other New Orleans music luminaries, they've stayed true to their Country/Soul sound.  Of their latest release ‘Lucky You’ , Britain’s Rock n Reel Magazine wrote The Believers are “What Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three might’ve sounded like if they’d jammed with The White Stripes.”  (This is a repeat from last week - so, don't miss out again!)

    Stay in Mid-City and head on down to Banks Street Bar (4401 Banks) for some Major Bacon and some FREE BLTs - tonight at 10:00 pm...you can never get enough of the bacon!!

    Veggies, Magic and Music!

    You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even grab some lunch!  St. James Cheese Company is fixing up some great food each Tuesday in July at the Market.....on the menu today: Louisiana tomato gazpacho Andulus, homemade pate de Campagne sandwiches on baguette with cornichon, and local cantaloupe, prosciutto & cheese plates with green salad.. ....yummy!!

    Bring your kiddies (and adults too) over to the Alvar Library (913 Alvar) for the Summer Reading Event at 11:00 am  to 2:00 pm with the World's Smallest Magician - Irwin Royes -  it's going to be loads of magic and fun for the entire family!!

    The Trinity Artist Series continues tonight at Trinity Episcopal Church (1329 Jackson Ave.) with "Organ & Labyrinth" with Albinas Prizgintas on the 5000 pipe Trinity tracker organ. The program includes some of the greatest music ever written ranging from Classical Baroque to vintage rock and popular tunes. The concert is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and is FREE!

    Independence Day is a day early in Chalmette with a "Celebration" today at Torres Park (8201 W. Judge Perez) from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.  The celebration begins with a bell-ringing ceremony, followed by a party in the park with food, face painting, popcorn and snowballs, a dunking booth and a hot dog eating contest!!  Music by 5 Finger Discount and a fireworks show finish up the fun!

    St. Charles Parish is celebrating too - at West Bank Bridge Park (13825 River Road)...Opening ceremonies begin with a military flyover  and the fun goes on from 6:00 to 9:00 pm with entertainment by Seabrook and a fantastic fireworks show at 9:00 pm!!  Entrance is FREE, but support and buy concessions - the money will benefit local charities.

    And don't forget about St. John the Baptist Parish!!  Head on over to St. Peter Church in Reserve and the Edgard Courthouse to view the spectacular fireworks show at 9:00 pm!!  The Parish sponsors a fun evening with food, entertainment and of course fireworks - admission is FREE!!

    And you got birthdays!!

    Celebrate this evening with Vince Vance and the Valiants and his big Legends Show!! Vance is throwing a party at the Rock 'n Bowl (3000 S. Carrollton Ave.) celebrating Pete Fountain & Satchmo's Birthdays with some of his favorite friends. It's only $10 for General admission. And check out the music - Rockin Dopsie Jr, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, Teen-heartthrob Eddie Powers, Trumpeter Kidd Merv, John Blancher and special guest star, our own Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne with his hit "She is Louisiana." All the Valiants will be there and the great Jimmy Vee will thrill everyone with his Simultaneous Saxes. And of course the beautiful Valiantettes! Lori Anselmo Gomez, will be their to unveil her latest creations. It all happens tonight from 3:00 to 8:00 PM with special seating at 2:30 for $15.00.

    **Though Pete is 80 and just got out the hospital, Vance and his krewe are trying to get him there by 3 or 4:00 PM as the Lt. Governor will make Pete an Ambassador for the State of Louisiana. None of my Legend Concerts should be missed, especially this one!!

    Happy 2nd of July - Take a Road Trip!!

    Good Morning Everybody,

    It's 4th of July weekend...and there's lots of fun going on!

    Adopt your forever friend over at Jefferson Feed Pet and Garden Center (4421 Jeff Hwy.)...It's Fire "Cat" Ker Adoption Day from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm!!!  There will be plenty of cats and kittens for adoption with special Independence Day only adoption fees!  

    You should head on over to the Northshore for the 33rd Annual Mandeville Seafood Festival with food, music, carnival rides, fireworks and family fun at Fontainebleu State Park.  Tickets are only $10 if you arrive before 5:00 pm!!  ($15 thereafter) - Check out tonight's musical line-up!

    Take a little ride to Houma today for the Independence Day Parade and Fireworks Celebration at the Houma Civic Center (346 Civic Center Blvd.).  There's gonna be yummy food and entertainment including a concert by the Houma-Terrebonne Community Band.  The fun goes on from Noon to 9:30 pm with a big fireworks show to top off the fun at 9:30 pm!!
