Patriotic Celebrations!

Tonight head on down to Lafreniere Park (3000 Downs Blvd.) for Uncle Sam Jam 2013 at 5:00 pm. The Annual Family Day with Music & Fireworks Display. The Jam features food & beverage concessions, music, and fireworks display. Performance by Ghost Town (5-7pm); the New Orleans Concert Band (7-9pm); FIREWORKS AT 9 PM; and Bucktown Allstars (9:15-11:00 pm). FREE ADMISSION! Don't forget your blanket or lawn chairs AND enjoy the evening under the stars!

Wear your red, white, and blue and join in as City Park celebrates the 3rd of July! Bring your friends and family along for this new annual family event right here in your City Park from 7:00 to 9:00 pm (fireworks at 9:00)! The Marine Corps Band and the Naval Band of New Orleans will play on the Goldring Woldenberg Great Lawn. You're invited to bring your chairs and blankets to listen to them play music with a patriotic theme. They'll even have some sing-a-longs for you, too!

Born in show business and raised on the road with her famous dad, the singer/songwriter/artist has earned her own reputation around the country for her energetic charismatic performances. She will perform songs of her father as well as some of her original tunes. The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out...$10 for adults and $3 for children.

Need a little art, culture and music? You gotta go to the show at the Ogden Southern Museum of Art (925 Camp St.) - better known as Ogden after Hours. Tonight the Ogden has a Tribute to Gary Hirstius - featuring The Storyville Jazz Band led by Bruce Hirsitus, Tommy Malone and Ray Ganacheau, Kim Carson, Jim McCormick, Little Brooklyn reunion, and The Junior Mays Band reunion.
*A music memorial for this New Orleans native, guitarist, and singer/songwriter. Hirstius was well known for is soulful lyrics and sandpaper vocals. He left behind an expansive music catalogue in which his spirit and legacy lives on. Tonight the Ogden has the Seth Walker. Now based in New Orleans, Seth Walker was raised in rural North Carolina surrounded by a musical family. His interest in music was influenced by his parents, both classically trained musicians. Seth began playing the cello at the age of three but eventually fell in love with the guitar. Once Seth was introduced to the blues by his uncle, he began to trust his own voice and his desire to express himself through music. He plays a mixture of Rock, progressive Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and Gospel; the sort of music that implies something for everybody when it's played. Rivers, one of only three Jazz musicians ever known to play the bagpipes, would probably call himself a saxophonist, but his forte is really an amazing musical dexterity that has helped him master a dozen other instruments. You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm for the freshest veggies, fruits and seafood. Today for the Green Plate Special they welcome  a Mano. Last week was truly delicious with strawberry glazed pork skins, green salad with kumquats and pinenut brittle, marinated shrimp with farro and winter squash, roasted pork sandwiches with provolone and rapini greens, and cannoli with truffle honey and candied pecans - come see what's in store today!

3rd of July Fun!

The Jam features food & beverage concessions, music, and fireworks display. Thursday w/a Stroll, Concerts in Parks & a Museum, & Top it off w/a Benefit!

What a beautiful evening for a stroll on Royal!

This evening is the Royal Street Stroll sponsored by Rouses the fun starts up at 5:30pm and goes until 8:30pm at the 300 Royal Street, The Wine and Food Experience Event brings together New Orleans' greatest gifts: rare antiques, fine art, live jazz and stunning historic architecture with the world's outstanding wines. Shop the enchanting galleries of Royal Street while experiencing wine offerings at each stop, as live jazz music fills the air. As always, the Krewe of Cork will parade down Royal Street to add to the fun!

At the event, in exchange for your ticket, you will receive a 2012 Wine Glass & Wristband that allows you receive wine & food offerings.  Tickets are $75 per person in advance ($90 on-site), available at NOWFE....If you're poor like me and can't afford the wristband...be sure to head down anyway and support the shops and establishments on Royal this evening...it's a fun event!!!

Go hang out at City Park this evening and enjoy Wendell Brunious for the Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series!  Wendell Brunious, trumpet player and vocalist, has recorded and toured with an impressive array of jazz greats. Wynton Marsalis, Lionel Hampton, Harry Connick, Jr., The Olympia Brass Band, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, many others.  Gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out...$10 for adults and $3 for children (it was $3 last year :)

Need a little art, culture and music? You gotta go to the show at the Ogden Southern Museum of Art (925 Camp St.) - better known as Ogden after Hours. Tonight the Ogden presents The Spinning Leaves -  The Spinning Leaves are a glowing experience, steeped in traditional American music, sweetened with psychedelic folk and a garnish of New Weird America. The duo consists of Michael Baker, whose Kentucky heritage is not only evident but absolutely authentic, and Barbara Gettes, a Pennsylvania native whose voice is simultaneously suggestive and comforting!  And tonight the O BAR's specialty drink is The Mint Julep - Seersucker, white linen and mint juleps -- summer has arrived. The O Bar will concoct a refreshing julep to rival those served at the Kentucky Derby!!

Tonight also kicks off the Birdfoot Festival....Named for the branching profile of the Mississippi River Delta, the inaugural Birdfoot Chamber Music Festival begins tonight and runs through Friday evening. The three-night celebration begins with an open rehearsal evening tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Uptown Jewish Community Center (5342 St. Charles Ave.); tomorrow there will be a Festival Concert at 8 p.m. at the Old U.S. Mint (400 Esplanade Ave.), and Friday there will be a "Party at the Piazza" at Piazza d'Italia (300 Poydras St.). Opera returns to Bourbon Street with Opera on Tap - It's New Orleans Summer in the city!  Song, wine, and air condition are the perfect combination for summer fun.! Celebratin' a Saints Win this Last Tuesday of 2011!!

You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market and stock up on your holiday menu items too!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even grab some lunch! December brings the fabulous food truck Geaux Plates to the Tuesday market. They'll be set-up right along side where the GPS tent usually is (making room for additional seating under the tent). Stop by and enjoy one of their delicious creations!!

Thompson, the Haunted Hearts convened in 2003 with the sole purpose of single-handedly resurrecting New Orleans' once rich, now nearly invisible hillbilly music heritage!   Come enjoy a delicious hot toddy at the "O" bar, and remember if you're a member of the Ogden you always get in free!
