Using historic footage, the film looks at the evolution of American music and the artists who created it, and attempts to expose the current state of American popular music. Musical Movie Fun!

"Musically Speaking:" free screening of Sparkle by Sam O'Steen tonight at the Antenna Gallery (3718 St. Claude Ave.) at 7:00 pm - Sparkle was recently remade with Whitney Houston and released in 2012, this 1976 feature film with the same name as a rags-to-riches (and, for some, rags again) story of three teenage singers in Harlem who form a girl group in the late 1950's. Starring Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, and Philip Michael Thomas, and featuring original music by Curtis Mayfield, the low-budget original has since reached cult classic status since its successful mid-1970s release.

The concert kicks off at 6:00 pm as the Ogden presents Seva Venet's Storyville Stringband. Keeping the sounds of New Orleans string band jazz alive, the Storyville Stringband led by guitarist Seva Venet is a New Orleans Traditional Jazz band that performs on strings rather than horns. The music pulls from the same repertoire, rhythms and spirit as the funky down-home sound of a brass band, but without the brass.! Tonight get some delicious dinner and wine at Salu' (3226 Magazine) - Executive Chef Dustin Brien has prepared a four course menu (plus intermezzo) paired with wines selected by General Manager Greg Thomas that take you along a journey through the Mediterranean.
