"Musically Speaking:" free screening of Soul to Soul tonight at the Antenna Gallery (3718 St. Claude Ave.) at 7:00 pm - On March 6, 1971, some of the greatest artists in popular music history traveled from the United States to Ghana, West Africa, to take part in a 14-hour musical celebration of the 14th anniversary of the independence of that country. Over 100,000 enthusiastic locals gathered for this unique cultural exchange between two continents. The award-winning film combines classic concert performances with scenes documenting the artists getting in touch with their roots as they return to the cultural motherland. With Wilson Pickett, Ike and Tina Turner, Santana, the Staple Singers, Willie Bobo, Les McCann, Eddie Harris, and the Voices of East Harlem.

Their dream of success takes them from amateur nights in ghetto clubs to the pinnacle of show business success and personal tragedy. Written, directed by, and starring Robert Townsend, and co-written by Keenan Ivory Wayans.

"Musically Speaking:" free screening of Celia the Queen tonight at the Antenna Gallery (3718 St. Claude Ave.) at 7:00 pm - This inspiring documentary about Celia Cruz, the “Queen of Salsa,” tells the story of the little girl from Havana who became an international diva, bringing the sound of salsa music to the world. When she fled Castro's Cuba in 1960 and arrived in the U.S., she continued an already-successful career, fueled by her partnerships with salsa greats Tito Puente, Willie Colon, and Johnny Pacheco. Ironically, while she became known as the voice of Cuba around the world, her once beloved music was banned in her home country. Also featuring David Byrne, Quincy Jones, Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia, Cachao, Wyclef Jean, and more.

Celebrated filmmaker Robert Mugge (New Orleans Music in Exile, Gospel According to Al Green) captures the artist in performance and in repose, speaking candidly about his life, creative process, spirituality, and music. You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market! Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm for the freshest veggies, fruits and seafood. Today for the Green Plate Special Chef Lisa Barbato will be there to preview her soon to open café, Rivista. Look for it on Magazine Street in March. Until then, enjoy Lisa's themed lunches all month long! This week, Lisa is taking us on a taste adventure through Mexico this week! For a hot soup, give some Posole a try, or grab a bowl of vegan tortilla soup to go. She will also feature Yucca salad with cabbage slaw, and green chicken enchiladas. For dessert, tres leches cake is perfectly sweet and utterly delightful.....yum!

One of the key sonic architects of funk, legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker first gained fame for his 1960s – early 1970s work with James Brown, whose impassioned shouts for a sax solo (“Maceo! Blow your horn!”) would make Parker the Godfather of Soul’s most famous sideman. After leaving James Brown, Parker joined Parliament-Funkadelic, becoming an integral part of the sound of hundreds of P-Funk recordings and concerts in the mid-late 1970s, under the helm of George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Parker, who most recently has toured with Prince’s band, will be playing locallyl at Tipitina’s on February 28, two days after the screening of this documentary.

Check out the Musically Speaking Movie Series - "Musically Speaking" is a series of music-themed movies and documentaries, curated and hosted by DJ Soul Sister taking place in every Monday in August at Cafe Istanbul (New Orleans Healing Center - 2372 St. Claude). Check out the Musically Speaking Movie Series - "Musically Speaking" is a series of music-themed movies and documentaries, curated and hosted by DJ Soul Sister taking place in every Monday in August at Cafe Istanbul (New Orleans Healing Center - 2372 St. Claude).
