Kick off your Irish festivities a little early and head on out to St. Alphonsus Church (2025 Constance) in the Irish Channel for Fun Under the Frescoes - Irish Extravaganza - the concert begins at 6:00 pm with the Crescent City Celtic Band plus the McTeggart Irish Dancers! Beverages are generously provided by Gordon Biersch, The Boondock Saint and Vino Wholesale. Admission is $10 and includes three complimentary beverages and a $25 membership (per person) gets you a free pass to the entire concert series! **St. Alphonsus Catholic Church was built in 1855 to serve the needs of the Irish Catholic immigrants who began settling in the neighborhood in the 1840s. In 1979, the church was closed. After a continuing fall into decline, FOSA was formed in 1990; in 1996, the building was declared a National Historic Landmark. With glorious, yet deteriorating, ceiling frescoes and stained glass windows over a century old, the building is breathtakingly beautiful and has been featured in several movies… and the acoustics rock! Movies in the Garden: The Princess Bride - at the New Orleans Museum of Art's (NOMA) Sculpture Garden - NOMA and the New Orleans Film Society are bringing more of your favorite films to the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. This Friday, catch the 1987 comedy The Princess Bride.
**Admission: $6 for adults, $3 for NOMA/NOFS Members & children, 7 to 17. Guests who purchase admission to the museum will also have access to the Sculpture Garden and activities. Children 6 and under are free.

Starlight Racing at the New Orleans Fairgrounds (1751 Gentilly Blvd.) - Groove on down to the sounds of the Bucktown All-Stars and DJ Live! Gates open at 4:00 pm and the first post is at 5 p.m. The live bands take to the Clubhouse stage at 7 p.m., while the DJs in the Miller Lite Beer Garden spin nonstop until after the last race, about 9 p.m.
Admission and Parking:
*General Admission to Fair Grounds for Starlight Racing is $5.
*Admission to the Clubhouse or the Miller Lite Beer Garden is an additional $10.

History!
The Friends of St. Alphonsus (FOSA) is holding its 20th Roots Program at St. Alphonsus Church, 2025 Constance Street on Saturday, from 10 am until 1:30 pm. It will feature three presentations highlighting the people whose stories made history in the Irish Channel.
The first presentation will feature research on the Irish population during the latter part of the 19th century by Perry Faulkner, a Tulane intern workinig with FOSA. Another one will feature a preview of the upcoming exhibit at St. Alphonsus on the religious of the Irish Channel which will open in April. The feature presentation will focus on Father James Sheeran, CSSR, a widower, father, Redemptorist priest and chaplain to the 14th Louisiana Regiment during the Civil War. Dr. Patrick Hayes, Ph.D, archivist for the Redemptorist Baltimore Province, will present highlights from a 2 volume diary kept by Father Sheeran during his service as Chaplain in the Confederate Army.
Registration is $15 for FOSA members and $20 for all others. It will also include a lunch of corned beef and cabbage with Irish coffee and desserts at the conclusion of the program. A Market!
Head on out to the Piety Street Market (The Old Ironworks - 612 Piety St.) from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. There's gonna be live music by Rites of Swing! And of course, 40+ vendors offering an eclectic assortment of art, handmade jewelry and crafts, homemade goodies, vintage collectibles and flea market finds at this bustling neighborhood market.
Oysters!
Head on down to the Quarter early for the Louisiana Oyster Jubilee at 9:30 am on the 300 block of Bourbon Street. There's gonna be music, and food with the world's longest oyster po-boy!! The "Best Oyster Po-Boy in New Orleans Competition" kicks off at 9:30 am with the construction of the humongous sandwich..cutting and distribution begins at Noon. First come first served - so get there early - yum!!!

The Louisiana Music Factory (210 Decatur) has been renovated and is looking all pretty for the return of the In-Store Concerts. Be sure to come on by Saturday for free performances by Micah McKee at 2:00 pm and Sweet Olive String Band at 3:00 pm. While you're there be sure to peruse their amazing CD collection and bring home some Louisiana music to enjoy!
Parade!
Tonight is the annual Italian-American Marching Club's St. Joseph's Day Parade at 6:30 pm. It kicks off on the corner of Canal and Chartres and marches through the Quarter. Hundreds of tuxedo clad, flower carrying marchers will head through the streets handing out fava beans and paper flowers for a hug and a kiss! The Nickel-A-Dance concert series continues over at the Maison on (508) Frenchmen Street at 4:00 pm with Frank Oxley's Joint Chiefs of Jazz. The free series runs the entire month of March and it's family friendly - so bring the gang!!
Garden Party!
On the second Sunday of March, April, May and June, at 4:00 pm the New Orleans Botanical Garden and The Backbeat Foundation will host GARDEN PARTY an outdoor concert series on the beautiful Robert B. Haspel Garden Stage. The stage is located in the New Orleans Botanical Garden on the east side of the Pavilion of the Two Sisters. Music lovers will enjoy great music while relaxing on the lawn and savoring the beautiful surroundings of the Botanical Garden. Befitting the setting, the series will focus on Louisiana Roots Music. This Sunday's performance includes the Honey Island Swamp Band plus Mia Borders!

1st Annual Prima Festival - Prima Fest will be the first major heritage festival to kick off the 2013 Spring Festival Season here in Louisiana. The festival dates are March 7th-10th and will be held at Mississippi River Heritage Park, 1101 Convention Center Blvd., New Orleans featuring restaurants and a four day talent line-up. Admission will be $10.

*Louis Prima was born in New Orleans and remains one of the greatest in popular music and a powerful entertainment influence over the decades. The King of Swing, Louie Prima scored chart topping hits such as, Jump Jive and Wail, Just a Gigolo, Sing, Sing, Sing, Oh Marie, A Sunday Kind of Love and many more. In 1954 Louis downsized his band and created a small group named the Witnesses with his beat combined with New Orleans Jazz. He became the Father of Las Vegas entertainment. He was awarded the very first Grammy Award in the vocal group category for That Old Back Magic and his song, Sing, Sing, Sing was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1958. He also appeared in Disney's 1967 motion picture classic, The Jungle Book. Louis Prima passed away August 24, 1978, but his music lives on. Louis sings:
When the end comes I know they'll say just a gigolo. And life goes on without me...

Celebrating the rich history of St. Alphonsus, the series culminates on March 13th with an Irish extravaganza featuring the Crescent City Celtic Band and the McTeggart Irish Dancers.

**St. Alphonsus Catholic Church was built in 1855 to serve the needs of the Irish Catholic immigrants who began settling in the neighborhood in the 1840s. In 1979, the church was closed. After a continuing fall into decline, FOSA was formed in 1990; in 1996, the building was declared a National Historic Landmark. With glorious, yet deteriorating, ceiling frescoes and stained glass windows over a century old, the building is breathtakingly beautiful and has been featured in Treme and several movies… and the acoustics rock!

Fun Under the Frescoes with Paul Sanchez - Tonight at St. Alphonsus!
Happy Wednesday!!
Tonight is the night!! The Friends of Saint Alphonsus presents the highly anticipated second season of the Fun Under the Frescoes concert series at St. Alphonsus Church (2025 Constance St.) from 6:00 to 8:00 pm!
The series kicks off on November 14th re-living the magic of the premiere show of our series, with Irish Channel native Paul Sanchez with special guest Arsene DeLay!
Tickets are $10 and include 3 complimentary beverages (which includes craft beer, Jameson, margaritas and Pinot Grigio!!) Memberships starting at $25 include admission to every concert!
Don't forget to come hungry - Ms. Linda the Ya-Ka-Mien Lady will be serving up some delicious food too!

Good Morning Everybody, Happy Pre-St. Patrick's Day and Erin go braugh!
Kick off your Irish festivities a little early and head on out to St. Alphonsus Church (2025 Constance) in the Irish Channel for Fun Under the Frescoes - Irish Extravaganza - the concert begins at 6:00 pm with the Crescent City Celtic Band plus the McTeggart Irish Dancers! Beverages are generously provided by Gordon Biersch and the Boondock Saint. Admission is $10 and includes three complimentary beverages and a $25 membership (per person) gets you a free pass to the entire concert series! (no worries - we'll be kicking the series back up in the Fall!)
