Satchmo SummerFest gets an early start this morning with a Jazz Mass and second-line, 10 a.m., at St. Augustine Church (1210 Gov. Nicholls St.). The Treme Brass Band plays during a Mass at the church of Sidney Bechet.  About 11:30 a.m., following the Mass, there will be a second-line parade featuring Grand Marshal Boe Monkey Red, Jennifer Jones, the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, Million Dollar Baby Dolls, Dumaine Street Gang, Sudan Social Aid and Pleasure Club, Undefeated Divas, TBC (To Be Continued) Brass Band, Baby Boyz Brass Band and more.

Then get your self down to the the corner of Decatur and Esplanade for Satchmo SummerFest today!  Satchmo SummerFest has extended its hours from noon to 8 pm and for the first time, fans will enjoy ‘Satchmo in the Shade’ - musical performances under completely tented areas. Looking for more fun stuff to do?

Have some fun and help out the kids over at Southport Hall (200 Monticello Ave.) with Pelicanpalooza starting up at Noon!!  The annual concert to support Camp Pelican, a sleep-away camp for children with pulmonary disorders.  They'll be music by The Molly Ringwalds, Five Finger Discount, Weathered and The Top Cats.  Admission is only $12 for this great cause and kids 12 and under get in FREE!!  Come on out and support the camp!

And if you want to dance the afternoon away head on down to the National World War II Museum (945 Magazine) for this FREE event the Summer Sunday Swing Series!  Professional swing dancers will provide coaching for dancers at all levels while your swinging to The New Orleans Moonshiners - It's dance lessons at 1:00 pm and more great music from 2:00 to 4:00 pm!

Enjoy music in a beautiful setting at Trinity Episcopal Church (1329 Jackson) as the Trinity Artist Series continues this evening at 5:00 pm.  LPO violinist Kate Withrow and Eleni Dafeka from Greece, perform sonatas for violin and piano by Schubert and Syzmanowski.  This concert is FREE and open to the public.

Looking for a romantic evening of music?  Check out the Summer Twilight Romance Series at the Jazz Back Porch at the N.O. Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center (918 N. Peters) at 7:00 pm -  Harmoniemusik New Orleans continues a summer series of classical chamber music at the Back Porch, including trios, quartets, quintets and more.  Admission is FREE - but donations are accepted and appreciated.

Friday Satchmo Struttin' and Lots Mo' Music!!

Happy Friday Everybody - I hope you're rested up cause you got a busy weekend ahead!

Tonight kicks off Satchmo Fest with the SATCHMO CLUB STRUT on Frenchmen Street!!

In true Satchmo style, there’ll be some Struttin' on historic Frenchmen Street tonight from 6:00 pm to 2 am.  The jazzy club crawl offers the perfect chance to experience the sights and sounds of New Orleans’ unique music scene in a progressive jazz concert that spans 17 locations along Frenchmen Street! 

Throughout the evening, music aficionados will be treated to jazz performances by Centurion Lionel Ferbos and a variety of stellar musicians, including Chris Thomas King, Don Vappie, the Soul Rebels, Shamarr Allen, Ellis Marsalis, Charmaine Neville, Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Glen David Andrews, the Free Agents Brass Band, Tom McDermott, Fredy Omar, Jason Marsalis, and others, including the “Satchmo of Japan”, Yoshio Toyama.   Plus, New Orleans’ own Allen Toussaint & Jazzivity, Davell Crawford, Donald Harrison Jr. and the Treme Brass Band will be featured on the Red Stripe Stage in Jane Alley, a new outdoor venue at 619 Frenchmen.

Strutters will dance, drink and dine the night away while supporting the New Orleans Jazz Celebration, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting and perpetuating jazz to audiences of all ages. Venues include Maison, Snug Harbor, Blue Nile, Three Muses, d.b.a., Vaso, Checkpoint Charlie’s and Bicycle Michael’s, to name a few. There will also be featured signings of jazz-themed books by John Swenson, Tom Jacobsen and Ricky Riccardi at Faubourg Arts and Books, and a display of children’s art from Benjamin Franklin, Edward Hynes Charter School, McDonogh # 42 Elementary School and McDonogh 35 High School, depicting individual interpretations of the contest theme, “What a Wonderful World”.

Keith will be reading and signing his new book, plus he'll be talking with legendary musician, composer and record producer Allen Toussaint (to whom a whole chapter of the book is devoted and will join Keith in the signing!)  It should be a great evening - you don't want to miss it!

The Trinity Artist Series continues tonight at Trinity Episcopal Church (1329 Jackson Ave.) with "Organ & Labyrinth" with Albinas Prizgintas on the 5000 pipe Trinity tracker organ. Okay, it may be to late to be the next Stage Door Idol, but you can certainly come on down to The World War II Museum Stage Door Canteen (945 Magazine St.) for the Competition - Who will be the next Stage Door Idol?  Preliminary finals happen tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 pm...It's a 40's themed talent competition.  So watch as area hopefuls vie for the title of the next Stage Door Idol by performing hits of the war years for celebrity judges.  Finalists will compete for an opportunity to headline as part of the Museum's popular Sunday Swing series on August 28.  Tickets are FREE but contact Ginny Clauss for reservations,

More Tuesday Night Fun!

It's Open Mic Night over at the Rusty Nail (1100 Constance) with Whiskey T of Country Fried!  Get on stage, or just check out the local NOLA talent!  The fun starts up at 8:00 pm.

There's a triple header over at the Spotted Cat (623 Frenchmen) starting up at 4:00 pm with Brett Richardson, then stay on for Smokin' Time Jazz Club at 6:00 pm, and finish off the night with Meschiya Lake and Little Big Horns at 10:00 pm!!

End your night over at the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street...with  the REBIRTH Brass Band they come on around 10:30ish - you'll be glad you stayed up late!!

Here's some good music to get your week off to a great start!

Monday Night Music

Stop by Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse (300 Bourbon - Royal Sonesta Hotel) for Bob French and the Original Tuxedo Band at 8:00 pm!!

If you're Uptown - It's never too hot for some porch sippin' over at the Columns Hotel (3811 St. Charles)....It's the jazzy sounds of Don Vappy at 8:00 tonight!

Head on down to Mid-City and to the Banks Street Bar (4401 Banks) about 10:00 pm for the N'awlins Johnnys and FREE red beans tonight!

BMC (1331 Decatur) has a great early show at 5:00 pm with Fun in the Pocket featuring Mayumi Shara (drummer extraordinaire)...then stay on for the next show at 9:30 with Smoky Greenwell's Blues Jam!!

And two great shows at the Maison (508 Frenchmen) with the sultry sounds of Jayna Morgan and the Sazerac Sunrise Band at 7:00 pm, and The New Orleans Super Jam with Gene Harding at 10:00 pm.

Be sure to make a stop by the Spotted Cat (623 Frenchmen) early for this great line-up of music....Brett Richardson at 4:00 pm, Dominick Grillo and The Frenchmen Street All Stars at 6:00 pm and be sure to stay on for the Jazz Vipers at 10:00 pm.....it's sure to be another smokin' Monday evening show.
