A Beautiful Thursday with an Elephant Birthday Party, Concerts in the Park and the "O", Plus Music 'Round Town!

What a beautiful Thursday!

It's an Elephant Birthday Party at the Audubon Zoo!  Panya, the senior member of the beloved pair of female Asian elephants at the Audubon Zoo, celebrates her 50th birthday on today at 2 p.m. Zoo staffers will present Panya with a cake, gifts and a giant birthday card signed by guests. Everyone is invited to observe the "party'' celebrating this milestone birthday from the Asian Domain boardwalk.

Panya, who weighs in at 9,500 pounds, will be joined by her longtime sidekick, 7,500-pound Jean, who is a spry 41. The two pachyderms have been star attractions at Audubon Zoo for 30-plus years. Jean came to Audubon Zoo in 1978 and Panya arrived in 1980.  The special birthday "party'' will be held in the temporary elephant exhibit across from the white tiger enclosure.

Music!

It's a beautiful night to hang out at City Park and enjoy  Pianist Lars Edegran, leader of the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra, as he teams up with world renowned clarinetist Tom Sancton for a fun evening of toe tapping New Orleans Jazz at the Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series!  The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out...$10 for adults and $3 for children.

Need a little art, culture and music? You gotta go to the concert at the Ogden Southern Museum of Art (925 Camp St.) - better known as Ogden after Hours. Tonight the Ogden has the Gerald French Trio.  Gerald started playing drums at the age of 5. He is the son of George French and nephew of Bob French, the Frenches being part of the pantheon of illustrious New Orleans musical families. He has traveled and performed with hundreds of musicians, treating listeners all around the world to the many different genres of music he has mastered. And remember if you're a member of the Ogden you always get in free!

Come on over to Freret Street to Gasa Gasa (4920 Freret) for an evening of lovely music from The Honeypots! Don't miss the trio of Margie Perez, Monica McIntyre and Lynn Drury at 8:00 pm!

It's the weekly wine tasting over at Pearl Wine Company (Orleans at Moss St.) - from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Come out and sample some fantastic wines and take some home too!  (They're also having a big wine garage sale on Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m. - great prices for delicious vinos - go ahead and stock up!)

And you can double your wine tasting fun! Check out Swirl located on Ponce de Leon right off Esplanade and enjoy a FREE wine tasting at 6:00 pm. Once you've tasted one of their excellent choices you'll be sure to be buy a bottle!

Friday Night at the Museum!

Check out Friday Nights at NOMA this evening over at the New Orleans Museum of Art beginning at 5:00 pm and celebrate the weekend!  The event is FREE with museum admissions. This Friday, Judith H. Bonner, Senior Curator/Curator of Art at the Historic New Orleans Collection will give a lecture entitled, "The 1884 World's Fair, William Woodward, and Women's Education."  $10 Adults, $8 seniors, students, active military, $6 children ages 17 to 7, children 6 and under are free.  Check out all the fun events this evening!

Doors open at 7:00 pm and the screening starts once the sun goes down.

Tonight come out for a very important fundraiser - Throwing Shade on Skin Cancer: A Benefit for Kara Morgan - 5:30 to 10 pm at NOLA Brewing (3301 Tchoupitoulas St.). Throwing Shade on Skin Cancer will have music, burlesque, beer and liquor (included in the cost of the ticket), silent auction, raffle, food trucks, and more! Freaksheaux To Geaux will be the burlesque troupe, and there will be music by Craig Klein, Bert Cotton, Margie Perez, Derrick Freeman, Ingrid Lucia, Paul Sanchez, Marc Stone, Soul Apostle, Chris Boone with Sol Fiya... and more! **Community activist, neighborhood leader, and mother, Kara Morgan, was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma in February 2013, and has begun aggressive treatment at the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Over and above what her medical insurance covers, Kara will incur the cost of frequent trips to Houston with extended overnight stays. These expenses, combined with the mounting out-of-pocket medical costs, will place a significant financial burden on Kara and her family.

It's time to do some Sippin' in Seersucker this evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Shops at Canal Place (333 Canal St.) - Don your best seersucker ensemble - or summer chic - for the party that kicks off the summer social season. Hosted by the Shops at Canal Place, the event benefits the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. It's Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Lawrence Square (corner of Napoleon and Magazine). Come find out about a range of opportunities to mentor and tutor youth across New Orleans. We are also excited to have live music with the Roots of Music, TBC Brass Band and Hot 8 Brass Band, food (crawfish) and entertainment from the 610 Stompers. Celebrate FORESTival 2013 from 11:00am - 5:00pm today at A Studio In The Woods (13401 Patterson Road)....For the third year in a row, A Studio In The Woods, will host FORESTIVAL - a celebration of art and nature. The festival showcases former artist/residents work as well as the history and happenings of this unique environment. Crafters Paradise: Selections from the Louisiana Crafts Guild
The Arts Council of New Orleans showcases some of the finest crafts persons from Louisiana in a group show currently on display in the Arts Council's Gallery ( 935 Gravier St.)
Featuring the work of Anita Ahrens, Amy Anderson, Greg Arceneaux, Annette Aucion, Rosalyn Bernard, Susan Breeland, Luann Duhon, Michelle Fontenot, John Gargano, Michelle Hudelot, Emma Hughes, Pat Juneau, Cynthia Kilgore, Laura Glen Lawson, Mandie Lucas, Terry Palmer, Andrew Jackson Pollack, Mark Sanders, and David and Emily Wortman.

Celebrate boudin, beer, bourbon, and boots as New Orleans plays host to Emeril Lagasse's 2nd Annual Boudin and Beer, a food and music festival celebrating all-things Louisiana at The Foundry (333 St. Joseph) from 7:00 to 11:00 pm. The charity bash, presented by Abita Beer and sponsored by Buffalo Trace, is hosted by Emeril Lagasse and honorary co-chairs Mario Batali and New Orleans' own Donald Link. Fifty of the country's hottest chefs from San Francisco to New York, with several of New Orleans' top chefs represented, will be cooking up their take on boudin, with plenty of craft brews from Abita Beer. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness for ALS and to support the Gleason Family Trust. The Gleason Family Trust is set up to help offset the incremental costs of living with ALS. Contributions go toward Steve Gleason's participation in advanced and experimental technology, equipment and treatments.
