Celebrate Peace

Come celebrate Peace Day with the New Orleans Kickoff from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Popp's Bandstand in City Park for The International Day of Peace Weekend. Celebrate with music from Paul Sanchez & The Rolling Road Show as WWOZ helps kick off the weekend of Peace.  There will be food and drinks available at Morning Call Coffee Stand too!




A Movie

Friday Nights at NOMA: Movie in the Garden
Start the weekend off right with NOMA! To celebrate the exhibition Gordon Parks: The Making of an Argument, they're screening the original 1971 SHAFT, directed by Gordon Parks. We've also got a family art activity, and the smooth sounds of Calvin Johnson.

A Concert

Head down to the Quarter for the kick-off of the Fall Season -  Concerts in the Courtyard at the Historic New Orleans Collection....Experience a concert in the courtyard at the Historic New Orleans Collection in the heart of the French Quarter - 533 Royal Street. The fall series opens Friday, September 20th with a performance the Brass-A-Hollics! Admission is $10, FREE for THNOC members, and includes 3 complimentary adult beverages from Old New Orleans Rum! Guests must be 21 or older to enter and memberships begin at the low low price of $35.00 per person.




SATURDAY

Oktoberfest

To kick-off Oktoberfest, Salú (3226 Magazine) is hosting a German-Style Pig Roast on Saturday! The Salú team will roast two pigs marinated in German beer, along with a citrus and sugar brine, garlic and rosemary. The pig will be served on a bun with red cabbage slaw and a coarse grain mustard sauce, and sold for $5. The restaurant will also be selling a selection of German beers at the bar. Prost!

Salú (3226 Magazine) will also be featuring a four-course, pre-fix Oktoberfest menu Tuesday, September 24 thru Sunday, October 6 featuring German-inspired beers and dishes. The meal can be purchased together for $40, or items will be served a la carte. All German-inspired dishes are prepared by our Executive Chef, Dustin Brien. Zydeco Fun

There's gonna be Cajun and Zydeco music and dancing on Frenchmen St. nearly non-stop from 4-11 pm on Saturday - Here's what's happening: Cajun/Zydeco Fais Do-Do at Maison (508 Frenchmen St.) with T'CANAILLE plus JOE HALL & the LOUISIANA CANE CUTTERS; free BASIC Cajun & Zydeco dance lessons  at 3:30 p.m. with Free admission!!* Bring your friends, family members and dancing shoes for 3 hours of *NON-STOP* Cajun & Zydeco music, dancing and family fun from 2 separate stages. The Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival at Lafayette Square celebrates it's 6th annual festival today and tomorrow starting up at 11:00 am!! The Fest is New Orleans' premier showcase of Southern blues and soul - with two stages of music, a dozen vendors of outstanding barbecue and a massive crafts fair featuring hand-made works by artisans from throughout the region. Satuday with Markets, Oktoberfest, Beer for Dogs and Art Everywhere!

Happy Saturday Everybody - what a beautiful day and so much going on!!!

Gentilly Fest celebrates all things "Gentilly," including continuous live music, sumptuous food from local restaurants & caterers and fine arts and crafts. The kids will have fun with the pony rides, facepainting and more. Gentilly Fest supports the New Orleans Police, Fire, EMS, Children's Music camps and other New Orleans organizations. This year, funds will be donated to the sports programs of Pontchartrain Park & Milne playgrounds and the Louis Armstrong summer jazz camp for kids.

Celebrate New Orleans' German Heritage with Oktoberfest 2011 today!! Grab your lederhosen (or dirndls) because it's time for Broussard's Restaurant and Courtyard's Second Annual French Quarter Oktoberfest, today from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The popular French Quarter establishment's festival will feature German cuisine, German beer and wine, live music, and a costume contest.

It's the Fall return of the Freret Street Market & Festival! Enjoy a fun market and festival! All the great food and great music you've come to expect, plus over 80 vendors, live music, a kid's area, and more! This week the kid's area will be full of kitties and doggies for adoption! Today from Noon to 5:00 pm the Crossroads Arts Bazaar in the New Orleans Healing Center at St. Claude and St. Roch will introduce itself to the community. In addition to our wonderful artists, we will have musical performances, special guest speakers and refreshments!

Does a long beer list make you freeze with indecision? Then the second annual New Orleans On Tap will be especially challenging, because the Louisiana SPCA Fund Raiser has 200 different beers. You can try imports, craft brews, well-known mainstream beers and even the efforts of local homebrewers. This year, New Orleans on Tap features more than beer. Wine and margaritas will be available. A larger selection of food will be offered. And Rotary Down and Flow Tribe are scheduled to play, ensuring that everyone will be as happy as a dog chasing a frisbee. New Orleanson Tap takes place from 2:00-7:00 p.m. by the boathouse and Big Lake in City Park (Friedrichs Ave. in front of Christian Brothers school). Admission is free. Beer samples start at $1. Gretna Fest, German Fun and Hamp Fest!!

It's a gorgeous Friday...Let's celebrate!!

Get your wine on this evening with a little tasting at Swirl (3143 Ponce de Leon) with the Friday Free for All from 6 to 8:00 pm....there's gonna be 4 free wines plus tapas from Chef Dan Esses' new restaurant, 3 Muses.   At the bar this week they'll be serving up some of Dan's empanadas, fresh pasta and more!!!

And you don't want to forget.....It's the opening weekend of the Final Oktoberfest at Deutsches Haus (200 S. Galvez)...this fun festival starts up at 4:00 pm today and is going on each weekend from Sept. 24- October 16...Admission: $8, Children 12 & under Free....The Deutsches Haus opens Oktoberfest for the final time at the original location in Mid City.  Enjoy great German food, drink, and music...come do the Chicken Dance!!!

All weekend long it's the 15th annual Gretna Heritage Festival, featuring local music, food and cultural experiences covering 25 city blocks in historic downtown Gretna. Acts include REO Speedwagon, Sister Hazel, The Vettes, The Doobie Brothers, The Charlie Daniels Band, Blake Shelton and Irma Thomas. Tickets are $15, $40 for a weekend pass and free for 12 and under. Be sure to head on down to Hamp Fest tonight with ConFunkShun + Michael Ward + Kermit Ruffins from 6:00 pm to midnight at Saint Augustine High School.....The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is a co-sponsor of the Edwin Hampton Music Festival.  As part of the Foundation's Jazz Journey series of tributes to important figures in New Orleans music, an all-star group of New Orleans jazz artists will perform at the festival.  The event honors the legacy of Edwin Hampton, who founded the St. Augustine "Marching 100" and was its band director for more than 50 years.  Proceeds from "Hamp Fest" will help to provide scholarship funds for needy applicants to St. Augustine, which was founded in 1951 as a Catholic high school for African-American males.  Tickets to Hamp Fest may be purchased online at http://www.purpleknights.com/. Celebrate Wine, Oktoberfest and Mignon!

Happy Thursday,

And another lovely day it is.....So, here's some fun stuff going on today!

Don't miss out on the weekly wine tasting at Cork and Bottle about 5:00 pm in Mid-City... Scott Lloyd, the national sales director for Frank Family Vineyards will be pouring Frank Family's Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel for free!!  And be sure to stop by the Crescent City Farmer's Market and patronize local Louisiana vendors with fresh veggies, seafood and more!  Stay on for Jumpin' Johnny Sansone for the 6:30 pm show!!

It's "Oktoberfest Outdoors" at the Intercontintal Hotel featuring Helmut Fricker and his band, and traditional German cuisine and many German beverages (of course beer!)  The fest takes place today and tomorrow from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pan American Plaza corner of St. Charles Ave. and Poydras St.....Go get your German on!!

Join The Historic New Orleans Collection (533 Royal) for the opening reception of the new exhibition Mignon Faget: A Life in Art and Design.  Curator Judith H. Bonner will join the designer to meet guests and discuss the exhibition. This event is free and open to the public tonight from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.

You should also check out The Ogden Southern Museum of Art concert this Thursday....better known as Ogden after Hours.   Music starts up at 6:00 pm with Mike Dillon & Earl Harvin, percussion duo......and be sure to check out the O-Fashioned cocktail: Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, Cointreau, Peychaud's bitters and a splash of soda water, and orange and lemon juices...(and remember if you get down there early - go grab a cocktail at the Circle Bar on Lee's Circle...one of the best happy hours in town!)

You can also go hang out at City Park this evening for The Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series with Julio and César! The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out..so....it's a good thing...$8 for adults and $3 for children.  (Click link above to confirm this event due to rain).
