Biggest Second Line Ever...and More!!

Happy Tuesday Everybody,

You can get your day started off right with a trip to the Farmer's Market!!!  Visit the Crescent City's Farmer's Market at University Square (200 Broadway) from 9:00 to 1:00 pm and pick up some fresh seafood, veggies and you can even get some lunch!  Susan Spicer's Mondo is cooking each Tuesday in June at the Market.....on the menu: Swiss chard dolmades with local feta and heirloom tomato salad, chilled buttermilk-cucumber soup with pickled local blueberries, and blueberry scone with lemon curd... ....yummy!!

Tonight New Orleans Traditional Jazz Camp is hoping for the Biggest Second Line Ever!!! Trad camp for adults is hosting a second line open to everyone at 7:00 pm starting at the Bourbon Orleans hotel in the 700 block of Orleans Ave.  Be a part of this history making event. Bring umbrellas, handkerchiefs, napkins...whatever makes you second line happier!!  This could be a Guinness world record, or the opportunity to consume a mass quantities of Guinness beer!

Looking to get your art on this evening...well we have just the thing for you!!  It's the first ever Twirling Ballerina Takes Center Stages at "Bottles and Brushes with Degas" at the Degas House (2306 Esplanade)!   Beginning at 6:30 PM, this one of a kind event provides artists and non-artists the opportunity to come and be inspired where Degas lived.  They’ll supply the paints, aprons, and brushes and  even one COMPLIMENTARY adult beverage. All you need to bring is a little creativity and a positive attitude - tonight paint Degas' "Twirling Ballerina".  Come a little early and enjoy the social hour at 5:30 pm....Cost is $40 and for more info and reservations call (504) 821-5009 or email: info@degashouse.com.

Celebrate the work of Homer Plessy with Plessy Day 2011 tonight starting at 6:00 pm. The celebration will begin in NOCCA's parking lot (2800 Chartres Street ) with a live performance by Carl LeBlanc and Jonathan Bloom. Guests will then be welcomed into NOCCA's Ellis Marsalis Jazz Studio for a reading and short talk by A.P. Tureaud Jr. and Dr. Rachel Emanuel, co-authors of A More Noble Cause. Together they tell the remarkable story of one civil rights lawyer's lifelong fight for racial justice in Jim Crow Louisiana. The book will be available for purchase from The Community Book Center. Light fare will be provided by Marriott New Orleans.  Admission to this event is free, and open to the public.

Good Music Tonight!

You got to go to Mid-City tonight to Chickie Wah Wah (2828 Canal Street)  for John Fohl at 8:00 pm...it's gonna be another amazing evening over at the Chickie..and don't forget to come hungry for the yummy food from Taceaux Loceaux!!

Celebrate Hellen Gillet's new cd with a cd release party at the Blue Nile - Balcony Room (532 Frenchmen) at 10:00 pm tonight...If you've never seen Helen you need to head on out for an amazing performance from this talented musician.

For more musical fun head on over to Mid-City to the Banks Street Bar and Grill (4401 Banks) for a great night of music with The Nola Treblemakersat 9:00 pm and stay on for Micah Mckee & Friends at 11:00 pm!

And Finish up your evening over at the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street for  the REBIRTH Brass Band!!  You'll be glad did!

Musical Monday!!

Happy Monday Everybody!

Hope everyone got their fill of oysters this weekend...here's some good music to get your week off to a great start!

Monday Night Music

It's never too hot for some porch sippin' over at the Columns Hotel (3811 St. Charles)....At 8:00 pm David Doucet of Beausoleil fame will have you enjoying this Monday night with some great music!!

Head on down to Mid City for even more music at Chickie Wah Wah (2828 Canal) with piano player (and sometimes guitar man) John Cleary at 8:00 pm...and come hungry - the kitchen is open with good food!!

You can stay in the Mid-City 'hood and go on over to Banks Street Bar (4401 Banks)about 10:00 pm for the N'awlins Johnnys tonight!

And If you're lookin' for some bluegrass music tonight you don't have to go too far to find it....Check out the Hi Ho Lounge (2239 St. Claude) and the Bluegrass Pickin' Party at 8:00 pm...there's no cover and FREE red beans (veggie red beans too)! 

BMC (1331 Decatur) has a great early show at 6:00 pm with Fun in the Pocket featuring Mayumi Shara (drummer extraordinaire)...then stay on for the next show at 9:30 with Smoky Greenwell's Blues Jam!!

Head down Frenchmen Street to d.b.a. (618 Frenchmen) for two great shows!!  It's  the Wilson & Moore Band at 6:00 pm and stay on for Glen David Andrews at 9:00 pm!

Be sure to make a stop by the Spotted Cat (623 Frenchmen) early for this great line-up of music....Brett Richardson at 4:00 pm, Dominic Grillo and The Frenchmen Street All Stars at 6:00 pm and be sure to stay on for the Jazz Vipers at 10:00 pm.....it's sure to be another smokin' Monday evening show.

To top off you're evening....you gotta go Uptown and over to the Maple Leaf (8316 Oak) for Papa Grows Funk at 11:00 pm they really know how to get your Monday night funkified!!!

Sunday Oyster Madness and More!!

It's the second day for New Orleans Oyster Festival with great Louisiana music, a cultural oyster tent, the finest local cuisine, and competitions for oyster shucking and the largest oyster. The "Acme Oyster House, World Oyster Eating Competition" will celebrate the 100 Anniversary of the revered New Orleans institution. Today is the Familia, Salud Y Vida Health and Wellness Festival at St. Anna's Episcopal Church. today from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. The Festival will promote healthy lifestyle choices and celebrate the culture and diversity of our city. Free services include blood pressure and diabetes screenings, HIV testing, acupuncture and massage, hurricane preparation, food stamps and Medicaid information and much much more! Entertainment for the Festival will feature live music by Ovi-g and the Froggies, dance and drumming by Grupo Garífuna Renovación 6, Capoeira demonstrations by Grupo Maculelé, performances by Ballet Foklórica Nicaragüense Cosmapa, and a special presentation by Jose Torres-Tama. The Festival will also offer fresh homemade food and drink from various Latin American countries and a chance to win one of our fabulous raffle gift baskets. It's going to be a fun and festive afternoon!!!

Oyster Lovin' Saturday and More!!

It's another fun Saturday in New Orleans..so go out there enjoy!!!!

It's time for the first annual New Orleans Oyster Festival with great Louisiana music, a cultural oyster tent, the finest local cuisine, and competitions for oyster shucking and the largest oyster. Tonight is the WYES International Beer Tasting....this a great one for all you beer lovers out there...You will be in beer heaven!!  Sample over 200 beers, ales, lagers and more....This event is at the UNO Lakefront Arena and goes from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  Tickets are $30 for groups of for seniors and groups of six or more, $35 for individual and $45 at the door...you really can't miss this beer event!

Back to the Beach and Beer!!

Happy Friday Everybody,

How come when you have a shortened week it always seems to go sooooo much slower?  Well it's the weekend now so, let's see what's happenin' this Friday night!

Friday Events 

It's a beer lover's dream.....and it's well worth the money (and it's for a great cause)!  Join WYES at the New Orleans Fairgrounds (1751 Gentilly Blvd.) to enjoy a relaxed evening of beer tasting with a limited number of guests during the WYES Private Beer Sampling.  In honor of the craft of American and European brewers, this event will feature the hardest to find craft brewed beers, specially made cask and home brewed beers, as well as special one-off beers from local breweries. Guests will be able to talk one-on-one with brewers, home brewers, and other beer industry members, as well as talk amongst fellow beer connoisseurs. Tasting tickets are $50 which also includes lip-smacking food by Crescent Pie and Sausage. Tickets to Friday's event can only be purchased by calling (504) 486-5511.

It's time to go Back to the Beach (in Kenner where Williams meets the Lake), have some great food, listen to some amazing music, and help to Save Our Lake and Our Coast!! Gates open up at 6:00 pm and tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ID, and $4 for kids under 12.  Here's the fun line-up of music for tonight!!  6:15 to 7:30 pm Bucktown Allstars, 7:50 to 9:15 pm Mixed Nuts, 9:35 to 11:00 pm Rockin' Dopsie, Jr. & the Zydeco Twisters...Go enjoy the Lake!

Du Mois Gallery (4921 Freret St.) presents their closing reception tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 pm....Stop by Du Mois for their most buzzed about show yet!!  Jessica Goldfinch's intimate shrinky dinks, J David Lindsley's sand cast glass weaponry, and Jesse Shaw's bold views on facets of Americanism all speak for themselves!!

Need a little culture and music? You gotta go to the show at the Ogden Southern Museum of Art - better known as Ogden after Hours.  The concert starts up at 6:00 pm. with The Renard Poché Band, a highly original New Orleans based group whose music is a unique blend of classic and modern funk/soul with occasional infusions of jazz, rock, latin, and positive rap.....so come on down for some music, culture and fun and the amazing Bill deTurk (my hubby) will be doing the in depth interview this evening..don't miss it!!

Go hang out at City Park this evening for The Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series with New Orleans Moonshiners and Cristina Perez. The gates open up at 5:00 pm and the performance starts at 6:00 pm in the City Park Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters...There is an admission charge, but hey, it's helping the Park out..so....it's a good thing...$8 for adults and $3 for children.

Celebratin' in the Squares with a Concert and a Movie!!

Happy Wednesday! 

Come on down to Lafayette Square for Wednesday at the Square and another stellar line-up for this year's concert series....there will be crafts, food and libations....Eric Lindell and The Revivalists get things movin' this evening at 5:00 pm - check out the entire line-up so you can make your plans.

School’s out for summer! Come celebrate with a FREE outdoor screening of Ferris Bueller's Day Off in Coliseum Square tonight!!!   Bring a blanket and/or chairs to get comfy for a night under the stars.  Food and drinks at 6:30pm with the movie starting at 8:15pm!

Carrollton) can help you out!  Get an entree' over at Ye Olde College Inn and then get a half price ticket to the show right next door at Rock N' Bowl....Tonight they've got Johnny J & the Hitmen plus Derek Huston at 8:30 pm - you'll be dancing the night away...you really don't want to miss it!!
