Happy Jazz Fest...and here's the first weekend and last day of Bill deTurk's "Tips and Picks"...Enjoy!!

 

Jazz Fest Tips – Take time to check out the amazing indigenous art in the Folk Crafts Area.  When you have nothing on your music schedule, go to the Fais Do Do Stage.  When you need to get out of the sun and sit down a minute, hit the Gospel Tent, although not sure how long you will be able to stay in your seat.  And number one tip is to master the “walk by”; face it, there is too much truly fabulous music, so “walk by” and check out an act for 10 minutes or so as you make your way to another mind-blowing destination.  Everyone have a great day and enjoy the world’s greatest music and heritage festival!

Top Picks - Day 3 looks like the busiest yet!  Jo “Cool” Davis (11:15 Gospel) – Look for an appearance from long lost local R&B legend “Sugarby” Crawford.  Freddy Omar con su Banda (11:10 Acura) – Chicks dig his cool Latin style.  Luther Kent, Phillip Manuel & Big Al Carson (12:35 Jazz Tent) – 3 stylistically diverse voices, one show.  Frankie Ford & Jean Knight (12:50 Gentilly) – Classic N. O. R&B revival.  Osborne, Fohl & Sansone (1:30 Blues) – All-star roots/blues trio.  Boukman Eksperyans (1:35 Congo) – Another chance to experience traditional Haitian music.  Dirty Dozen Brass Band (1:40 Acura) – One of New Orleans most famous brass bands.  Tom McDermott & Evan Christopher (2:00 Lagniappe) – Great place to have a seat and hear two brilliant musicians.  Honey Island Swamp Band (2:10 Fais Do Do) – Swampy bluesy southern roots rock.  Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88s (2:45 Blues) – Boogie woogie meets N.O. piano.  Dr. John w/ Special Guest Dave Bartholomew (3:10 Acura) – Louisiana pick of the day.  Keith Frank & the Soileau Zydeco Band (3:40 Fais Do Do) – Zydeco form the Boozoo school meets today.  Pete Fountain (4:25 Economy Hall) – 80 years old and still “Swinging Dixie”.  Big Chief Monk Boudreaux (4:25 Jazz & Heritage) – Get your Mardi Gras Indian on.  Tom Jones (5:35 Gentilly) – Non-Louisiana pick of the day… and last time he was in town, he stopped in and sang at the Apple Barrel, not kidding.

Savoy Center of Eunice Cajun Jam (12:40 Fais Do Do) – Saturday morning in Eunice comes to N. O.  Wayne Toups & Zydecajun (1:40 Acura) – Louisiana pick of the day.  Don Vappie & the Creole Jazz Serenaders (1:45 Economy Hall) – Learn what Creole Jazz is.  Midnight Disturbers (1:55 Jazz & Heritage) – Another Stanton Moore all-star jam.  Pine Leaf Boys (3:00 Fais Do Do) – 4 time Grammy nominees.  Irma Thomas (3:05 Acura) – Hope the Soul Queen of N. O. does not get booed by Bon Jovi Fans.  Emeline Michel (3:35 Congo) – Haitian girl singer.  John Boutte’ (4:05 Jazz Tent) – Good luck getting a seat for this one.  Ricky Scaggs (4:20 Fais Do Do) – Multi-instrumentalist with 14 Grammys.  Terrance Simien & the Zydeco Experience (6:00 Fais Do Do) – Winner of the very first Cajun-Zydeco Grammy.

Happy Monday Everybody...Let's see what's goin' on this hot day!

Featured Monday Fun and Music

Get your evening started off right at Chickie Wah Wah on Canal....they have musical legend Spencer Bohren for an early show at 7:00 pm...and I'm sure there's gonna be some yummy food too!!

Take a stroll along the River Road levee and stop at the River Shack Tavern at 7:00 pm tonight for some really GOOD red beans and rice, and the cool sounds of Amanda Walker....this is one great way to spend your hot Monday night with a cool river breeze!

It's also gonna be a lovely evening to spend some time on the Avenue at The Columns....Listen to some David Doucet from BeauSoleil fame and maybe even have a refreshing Ramos Gin Fizz...I hear they're famous for them!!

If you're headed to the Quarter go down to hear another amazing early show with Bob French and the Original Tuxedo Band at Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse show starts around 8:00 pm...with NO COVER.  Hey, Bob was just on Treme' last night too!

If you're lookin' for some bluegrass music tonight you don't have to go too far to find it....Check out the Hi Ho Lounge on St. Claude and the Bluegrass Pickin' Party at 8:00 pm...there's no cover and FREE red beans at this show too!

If you're hanging on Frenchmen Street be sure to make a stop by the Spotted Cat for the Jazz Vipers at 10:00 pm.....it's sure to be another smokin' Monday evening show.
